Immortals Fenyx Rising Review: | Sidnaz Blog

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a next generation title from Ubisoft that draws a lot of inspiration from 2017’s Nintendo Switch launch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, considered one of the best video games of all time. It was all the more special for how Breath of the Wild was a departure from the Zelda way of doing things, introducing voice acting to the franchise, and encouraging a freer approach to its massive open world. Nintendo’s gamble paid off, and as of September, Breath of the Wild has sold over 20 million copies. Given those numbers, it was only natural that other studios would come to copy its ingredients, in an attempt to serve the audience that doesn’t own the Switch or its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii U.

Ubisoft Quebec — the Canadian studio best known for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — is here to throw its hat into the ring with Immortals Fenyx Rising. It’s not the first one either, as the free-to-play Chinese title Genshin Impact beat it to the punch by a couple of months. Like Breath of the Wild, Immortals Fenyx Rising is set in an open world that has at its centre the villain’s massive lair, replete with red smoke. Fenyx — pronounced as “phoenix” — has the Wings of Diadalos that allow them to glide, as with Link’s glider. And just like Link’s Magnesis ability, Fenyx too can also lift up nearby objects thanks to Herakles’ Strength. Fenyx too can tame wild horses and then summon them at any time.

In fact, there is so much copying going on that some Immortals Fenyx Rising fundamentals go against Ubisoft’s own established ideas. In Assassin’s Creed games, you can climb up mountains and structures without having to worry about stamina. But because Breath of the Wild had a stamina meter for Link, Immortals Fenyx Rising has one too. It’s an understandable inclusion in the climbing department, or in Link’s case as he is literally holding onto the glider, but it makes no sense for Fenyx, because the Wings of Diadalos spring out of a futuristic gadget attached to their back. Sure, you can eat a blue mushroom to restore your stamina, but gliding’s connection to stamina has no logical bearing. It exists because it was there in Breath of the Wild.

For all my harping regarding the similarities, Immortals Fenyx Rising brings its own ideas to the table. The biggest difference is in the combat, wherein Ubisoft Quebec draws much more on Assassin’s Creed. As such, combat is a mix of light attacks (RB / R1) and heavy attacks (RT / R2), interspersed with the timely use of dodge (X / Square) and parry (LB + RB / L1 + R1) to regain stamina and retain your health. A perfectly-timed dodge slows down your opponents, allowing you to get a few more licks in before they recover. Additionally, Fenyx has access to “Godly Powers” such as an arrow that can be remotely controlled, a massive hammer that does area damage, tall spikes that can be summoned out of the ground, the ability to pull yourself towards flying enemies, or turn yourself invisible.

Having ideas is one thing, you’ve to execute them too. Immortals Fenyx Rising combat is generally bland, and it’s only when you get involved in boss battles that prove to be more satisfying, as they involve a bit more strategy. But even that turns rote if fights go on for too long, because you settle into a loop. Charge up your special attack, use it, add some light attack stabs, dodge incoming attacks, refresh your special attack. Rinse and repeat. It’s thrilling for a minute but if I have to execute the same strategy for five minutes non-stop, you’ve lost my interest.

Immortals Fenyx Rising also lacks in execution with its second major attempt to differentiate itself from Breath of the Wild. Unlike the Zelda game, Fenyx’s tale opts for a light-hearted tone. Immortals Fenyx Rising does its best to infuse fourth wall-breaking humour into the proceedings, with the help of the dual immortal narrators Zeus (unreliable) and Prometheus (reliable). As a champion of humankind, the latter believes in Fenyx, while Zeus has no patience for Prometheus’ tale and belittles every obstacle in Fenyx’s path. On one occasion, as Fenyx walks through a door, Zeus takes over the story and describes a monster as huge in size. The next moment, Prometheus sticks it to Zeus by changing the monster’s size. But the jokes trade in similar traits too much, and the humour eventually feels half-baked.

But the bigger problem with Immortals Fenyx Rising’s non-player characters (NPCs) is the general lack of them. Zeus and Prometheus are relegated to voices for the most part. Four more gods — Aphrodite, Athena, Ares, and Hephaistos — are central to the narrative, but their presence is minimal. They are only involved at the start and the end of a task. The only consistent NPC is Hermes, who strings along the tale and offers his snarky comments on the other gods. But between all that, you will spend several hours roaming around not encountering anything that doesn’t want to kill you. Unlike Breath of the Wild, there are no outposts that I came across, and no other wandering NPCs you might run into. The world of Immortals Fenyx Rising feels desolate and empty, like an elaborate stage made just for you.

That said, there’s a lot to do in said world. As is the case for Ubisoft open world games, the map of Immortals Fenyx Rising is littered with side quests and activities. Taking yet another cue from Breath of the Wild’s “shrines”, the game has Vaults of Tartarus, puzzles that give you access to in-game currencies which in turn can be used to upgrade your stamina or weapons. I enjoyed most of them, save for the restrictions to climbing that are imposed within these vaults. Elsewhere, you’ve a series of mythological challenges — they award you “Coins of Charon” that allow you to learn new skills and “Godly Powers” — which include rearranging paintings, navigating the map, controlling an arrow through hoops, or listening to a tune and then recreating it elsewhere.

But there is in fact too much of everything, as is becoming increasingly true for most Ubisoft open world games. This not applies to the side quests — half a dozen more seem to crop up every time you solve one — but also the main narrative. When Fenyx is asked to collect something, it turns into three things of the same kind. When you defeat a boss of one variety and are pleased with yourself, Immortals Fenyx Rising notes that you need to kill a few more to complete that side quest. It’s game padding clear as day. And at times, it will lock you out of certain opportunities because you haven’t unlocked a “Godly Power” that is required. Immortals Fenyx Rising doesn’t tell you what that power is, or where you can earn it either. It’s not very helpful and it only further adds to the annoyance.

And it’s not like you can choose to tackle only a few of each. Your character’s health, stamina, abilities, and weapons are tied directly to in-game currencies that are earned by completing different kinds of side quests. You need Coins of Charon for skills, Zeus’ lightning to boost stamina, “Ambrosia” to increase health, and shards of several colours to upgrade your weapons or potions. There are 14 in-game currencies in total, of which 12 can be found in the open world, one comes only from completing daily and weekly challenges, and the last of them is bought with real money and used in a microtransactions-driven in-game store that offers new cosmetics and horse companions. All the upgrades require significant resources, which is Immortals Fenyx Rising’s way of pushing you to do more quests.

It doesn’t help that the game doesn’t register a challenge’s completion unless you’ve explicitly registered your interest beforehand. During a story mission, I encountered and defeated a boss character. After the mission ended, I returned to my home base where I got the chance to check up on what the daily challenges are. Turns out that boss was on the list but I wasn’t entitled to the reward because I hadn’t signed up for it. If that is intentional design, it’s absurd. Hopefully this is a bug not a feature. Speaking of bugs, I didn’t encounter any during my time with Immortals Fenyx Rising, but the game did crash on me a couple of times, once even rebooting my Xbox as it crashed. The first instance happened prior to the day one update, and the other one after.

For all the deserved flak coming Immortals Fenyx Rising’s way for delivering a brazen Zelda clone, the Ubisoft game deserves some praise for executing most of the ideas well — and even adding to them. For instance, you can heal Fenyx without having to dive into a menu. Weapon durability is also a non-issue here, which was a controversial inclusion on Breath of the Wild. Fenyx can also jump and double-jump, unlike Link’s hop (at best). But the funny thing is that Immortals Fenyx Rising makes me want to revisit Hyrule. Not everyone can do that though, because they don’t wish to splurge on a console (one whose controllers have a drift issue that hasn’t been fixed) or because they live in countries such as India, where the Switch has never been launched, and Nintendo doesn’t have an official presence.

For all of them, Immortals Fenyx Rising is a game that they must try.

  • A fun adventure game
  • Puzzles are fun, enjoyable
  • “Godly Powers” are interesting
  • Fourth wall-breaking humour

  • Too much like Zelda
  • Game padding
  • Combat can turn into a chore
  • Lack of variety
  • Microtransactions
  • Need to pre-register for challenges

Disgusting, Says Asaduddin | Sidnaz Blog

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi responded to a Karnataka minister’s shocking comment (File)

A day after a Karnataka minister said the BJP would “definitely not give tickets (to contest elections) to Muslims”, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi hit back, labelling the remark “disgusting and shameful, but not surprising”. He said such an ideology was incompatible with the Constitution.

“Disgusting and shameful, but not surprising. Hindutva believes only 1 community has the right to political power and all others are subservient. This ideology cannot co-exist with our Constitution, which talks about liberty, fraternity, equality and justice,” Mr Owaisi tweeted Monday afternoon.

Earlier KS Eshwarappa, Karnataka’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, said the BJP would give tickets to Hindus but not Muslims.

Mr Owaisi has found himself and his party in the crosshairs in recent days in the run up to Tuesday’s Hyderabad municipal election. Essentially a mayoral race, it has emerged as a high-stakes battleground for the BJP, which called in the big guns to help it campaign.

On Sunday – the final day of campaigning – Home Minister Amit Shah held a roadshow and said the BJP would “rid Hyderabad of Nawab-Nizam culture“. Yogi Adityanath, at the Old City – widely seen as a stronghold of Mr Owaisi -, said the BJP would would rename the city as Bhagyanagar.

Karnataka MP Tejasvi Surya and Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay have referred to Mr Owaisi as “Jinnah” and threatened a “surgical strike to flush out Rohingyas and Pakistanis”.

The BJP, which claims an “unholy alliance” between the ruling TRS and the AIMIM, has also accused them of banking on votes from “Rohingya and Pakistani infiltrators”.

Mr Owaisi, though, has not taken these hits lying down.

On Saturday, at a public rally of his own, he taunted the BJP for deploying such senior figures for a local election. “Now only Donald Trump is left to campaign…” he said.

Boosted by its victory in an Assembly bypoll for the Dubbaka seat earlier this month, the BJP has targeted this election as a chance to carve out a space for itself in the southern state.

In 2016 the party claimed just four of 150 seats as Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s TRS swept 99. A strong result in Hyderabad now will help press its case in Tamil Nadu, where Assembly elections are due early next year.

Results for the 150 wards will be declared December 4.

Realme Patents Smartphone With | Sidnaz Blog

Realme has patented a smartphone design that has a unique oval-shaped rear camera module and a hole-punch display, as per a report. The illustration shared in the report shows the rear camera module has five cutouts, including a rectangular one. It is possible that this rectangular cutout features a periscope camera. When seen from the front, there is a hole-punch cutout on the top left corner, and the handset has noticeable bezels as well as a thick chin. The schematics also show a 3.5mm headphone port at the bottom.

IThome reports that a blogger shared the schematics of an alleged Realme smartphone with a unique rear camera module. As per the illustration provided with the report, the oval-shaped camera module features five cutouts – four circular and one rectangular. The circular cutouts are arranged in a diamond-shape fashion with the rectangular one sitting just below this setup.

There is no information on the camera/ lens but it is claimed that one of the circular cutouts will have a flash. The rectangular cutout could be a periscope camera just like we have seen in various smartphones. When seen from the front, there is a single hole-punch cutout on the top left corner, a chin and bezels on three sides.

The schematics of the alleged Realme smartphone also show a 3.5mm headphone and charging ports. As far as physical buttons are concerned, the power button can be seen on the right side, volume rocker is placed on the left.

Gadgets 360 is unable to confirm the claims, therefore, it is advised that users take this development with a pinch of salt.

Indian Navy MiG-29K Wreckage | Sidnaz Blog

The MiG-29K is an all-weather carrier-based multirole fighter by Russia’s Mikoyan (Representational)

New Delhi:

The missing pilot of the Indian Navy MiG-29K that went down in the Arabian Sea on Thursday evening managed to eject moments before it crashed.

Four days after the incident, Navy specialists have located the primary wreckage of the Russian-built twin-seat fighter. Sources told NDTV the ejection seat of Commander Nishant Singh, the instructor at the controls of the jet, is not present at this site.

The Commander remains missing. The second pilot, a trainee, has been rescued.

The MiG-29K is fitted with the Russian-built K-36D-3.5 ejection seat, widely considered the most sophisticated in the world. In the event of the ejection handles being pulled, the pilot in the rear seat is ejected first, followed by the pilot in the front.

Sources indicate the fighter was at a very low altitude when the pilots ejected. They add the trainee maintains he spotted a second parachute after he got out of the aircraft.

It is unclear why the personal locator beacon of the MiG-29K pilot failed to ping an electronic distress signal after making contact with the water.

The government continues to conduct an intensive aerial, coastal and surface search operation involving naval ships and aircraft. Divers are carrying out underwater searches using specialised equipment to map the seabed in the area around the primary wreckage site, the sources added.

Commander Singh, who recently got married, conveyed news of his wedding to his Commanding Officer in May in a humourous letter.

“I regret to be dropping this bomb on you at such a short notice, but as you would agree, I intend to drop a nuclear one on myself and I realise that just like all the split-second decisions we take up in the air in the heat of combat, I cannot afford myself the luxury of time to re-evaluate my decision,” the Commander wrote.

“…(my fiance and I) have come to a mutual agreement we might actually be able to get through the rest of our lives together, without killing each other… I officially seek your approval,” he wrote.

He indicated his marriage would take place via a Zoom video call because of restrictions in place during the Covid pandemic.

On Sunday the Navy said several parts of the aircraft, which crashed after taking off from aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, had also been recovered.

A high-level inquiry has been ordered to investigate what is the third mishap involving a MiG-29K aircraft in the last 12 months.

In February a MiG 29K crashed after being hit by birds over Goa. The pilots managed to steer the jet away from inhabited areas before ejecting, an action which drew praise from Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik.

In November last year, a MiG-29K trainer crashed outside a village in Goa. Both pilots ejected safely.

The MiG-29K is an all-weather carrier-based multirole fighter aircraft developed by Russian aerospace company Mikoyan (MiG). The Navy procured a fleet of 45 MiG-29Ks at a cost of around two billion dollars to operate from INS Vikramaditya.

Google Chrome Getting Dark | Sidnaz Blog

Google and Microsoft are working to bring some enhancements to the dark mode on Chrome. This comes some months after Google first introduced dark mode on its Chrome browser. The improved dark mode is expected to be a part of Chrome for Windows 10 and macOS in the future. Meanwhile, it is already in testing through the latest Chrome Canary build. Google released Chrome 87 last week as the latest stable version of its Web browser. It offered a Chrome Actions feature to let users type commands in the address bar.

As reported by Windows-focused blog Windows Latest, a commit has been made by Google engineers on the Chromium Gerrit that details the improvements coming to Chrome’s dark mode. The search giant is updating WebUIs to bring a complete dark mode experience, with scrollbars appearing in grey colour, according to the commit.

The upcoming enhancements will allow Chrome to apply a dark theme to additional elements including scrollbars. At present, scrollbars don’t show any changes when you switch from the light mode to a dark one.

In addition to scrollbars, Google is updating internal pages of Chrome to bring expanded support for dark mode. These changes will reportedly be visible in settings, bookmarks, history page, new tab page, and PDF printing screen.

The update is already provided for testing through the Chrome Canary channel. It can be tested by adding “–enable-features=WebUIDarkMode,CSSColorSchemeUARendering –force-dark-mode” to the command line.

However, regular users may need to wait for some time to see the latest change on their systems. It is likely that the updated dark mode could be a part of Chrome 88 next year.

Aside from the inputs coming from Google engineers, Microsoft is making certain changes at its end to specifically bring dark mode improvements to Chrome for Windows 10 devices. The Redmond company has, for instance, already fixed an issue where the scrollbars on the page weren’t dynamically changing the colour scheme upon switching to the dark theme.

Google is also speculated to bring an update to its search engine to switch to dark mode when a dark theme is applied at the system level. Similarly, Chrome may receive a few scrolling improvements next year — through updates coming to the Chromium project from Microsoft.

Chrome received the existing dark mode for macOS users in March 2019, though it reached the Windows platform in April. Google last year also brought a dark mode to the Android version of its Chrome browser.

iPhone 12 Camera Lags Behind | Sidnaz Blog

iPhone 12 has been put to test by benchmark site DxOMark to analyse its camera performance on a list of proprietary benchmarks. The latest iPhone model carries an all-new wide-angle lens alongside an ultra-wide-angle lens to deliver an enhanced photography experience over last year’s iPhone 11. The dual camera setup of the iPhone 12 is also identical to what’s there on the iPhone 12 mini. However, DxOMark testing pointed out that the available hardware on the iPhone 12 lags behind not only the iPhone 12 Pro models but also the flagships from companies such as Huawei, Oppo, Samsung, and Xiaomi.

iPhone 12 DxOMark camera test scores

The iPhone 12 received an overall camera score of 122 from DxOMark. Particularly in terms of still photography, the latest model received a score of 132, while its zoom performance got 41 points. The overall score of the iPhone 12 made it land just outside the top-10 best camera phones reviewed by DxOMark. It was eight points less than the 130 score achieved by the iPhone 12 Pro Max and six points less than the iPhone 12 Pro. Last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max also surpassed the iPhone 12 with an overall score of 124.

Android phones including the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, Oppo Find X2 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G have also outshined the iPhone 12, with better scores. Nevertheless, the 132 score received for still photography has brought the new iPhone to the list of top-10 phones for photo on the DxOMark database.

DxOMark notes that the iPhone 12 handles basics quite well, with generally accurate exposure, pleasant colour reproduction, and quick autofocus irrespective of any lighting conditions. The iPhone model is also found to result in photos with “plenty of details” in bright to moderate lighting conditions.

On the downside, the iPhone 12 is observed to have contracted dynamic range and more noise levels than expected. The phone is also found to have a disappointing simulated bokeh portrait mode. Further, the lack of a dedicated tele-module affects its zoom performance. White balance on the iPhone 12 also impacts both still photos and videos, according to the tests conducted by the DxOMark team.

The iPhone 12 received a video score of 112 on the DxOMark benchmark. The score is identical to what has been achieved by the iPhone 12 Pro and is just one point behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

“Its performance characteristics are almost identical to those of the iPhone 12 Pro — unsurprisingly, since the main camera hardware appears to be the same. Exposure is accurate and dynamic range is wide, thanks in part to the inclusion of Dolby Vision HDR,” the DxOMark team said in its review.

The iPhone 12 was however found to have limited dynamic range compared to the competition. Low-light performance on the newest regular iPhone model is also impacting videos with a loss of fine detail.

“If zoom and portrait mode performance aren’t priorities for you, the iPhone 12 gives essentially all the bang of the iPhone 12 Pro for fewer bucks,” DxOMark noted in the conclusion.

PM Narendra Modi Says “New | Sidnaz Blog

The reforms have given farmers new options and safeguards, PM Modi said

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke on the farm laws again, pointing out their positives, as his ministers scrambled to discuss the mammoth protest against the new laws. Camping at Delhi borders, the farmers, angry over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s conditional proposal for early talks, have threatened to gherao the national capital.

Reaching out to farmers, who have accused the government of making the new laws for the benefit of corporates, he said: “I know that decades of falsehood do put apprehensions in the minds of farmers…  I want to say this from the bank of Mother Ganga – we are not working with the intention of deceiving. Our intentions are as holy as the water of river Ganga”.

“If someone thinks that the earlier system is better, how is this law stopping anyone, bhai?” he added, in a bid to reassure farmers that the new open market system will not mean the end to the traditional mandis and support prices fixed by the government.

The reforms have given farmers new options and safeguards, he said during an address at an event in his home constituency, Varanasi. They are giving farmers better access to markets — both national and international.

“Farmers should get full profit from international markets. India’s farm produce is famous across the world. This big market and more money – shouldn’t they (the farmers) have this in reach?” he said.

“Earlier, any transactions outside a mandi were considered illegal. This was against small farmers who could not even reach mandis. Now even the smallest of farmers can legally operate outside mandis,” he added.
