GST Collections Touched Rs 1.16 Lakh latest news headlines

GST collections for July 2021 were Rs 1.16 lakh crore

Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2021 were Rs 1.16 lakh crore, 33 per cent more than the corresponding period of last year.

According to figures released by Finance Ministry on Sunday, gross GST revenue collected in July 2021 are Rs 1,16,393 crore, out of which Central GST is Rs 22,197 crore, State GST is Rs 28,541 crore and Integrated GST is Rs 57,864 crore (including Rs 27,900 crore collected on import of goods) and cess of Rs 7,790 crore (including Rs 815 crore collected on import of goods).

GST collections in July 2020 had stood at Rs 87,422 crore, while sequentially they had stood at Rs 92,849 crore in June this year.

“GST collection, after posting above Rs 1 lakh crore mark for eight months in a row, dropped below Rs 1 lakh crore in June 2021 as the collections during the month of June 2021 predominantly related to the month of May 2021,” the finance ministry said in a statement.

During May 2021, when the country had been severely hit by the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, many states were under partial or complete lockdown.

“With the easing out of Covid restrictions, GST collection for July 2021 has again crossed Rs 1 lakh crore, which clearly indicates that the economy is recovering at a fast pace. The robust GST revenues are likely to continue in the coming months too,” the ministry said.

Latest News Today – Taliban Hideouts Destroyed In Afghanistan Airstrike

A hideout used by Taliban insurgents is seen being destroyed in an airstrike by defense forces in a video released by the Afghanistan government on Twitter. Tens of terrorists were killed and wounded in the attack in Zherai district of Kandhar province, it said.

At least 250 such insurgents have been killed while nearly 100 were wounded in battles at several major cities over the past 24 hours, the government has said.

These developments come as the Taliban makes rapid territorial gains amid the US military’s final stage of withdrawal from the war-torn country.

After seizing large tracts of rural territory and capturing key border crossings, the Taliban have besieged provincial capitals. Last night they fired three rockets at the airport in Kandhar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city and a former bastion of the insurgents.

The attack at the airport, an installation vital for the logistical and air support needed to keep the Taliban from overrunning, came as they inched closer to capturing at least two other provincial capitals, including nearby Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.

The Afghanistan government has repeatedly dismissed the Taliban’s steady territorial gains over the summer as “lacking strategic value”.

Latest News Today – After Talks With Amit Shah, Mizoram Chief Minister On

Assam and Mizoram have been engaged in a tense border stand-off since July 26

The boundary dispute with Assam will be resolved amicably through dialogue, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said today after a telephonic discussion with Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He has appealed to the people of Mizoram to prevent any possible escalation of the situation.

“As per telephonic discussion with Union Home Minister and Assam Chief Minister, we agreed to resolve the Mizoram-Assam border issue amicably through meaningful dialogue,” the Mizoram Chief Minister said on Twitter.

Assam and Mizoram have been engaged in a tense border stand-off after seven people, including six Assam Police personnel, were killed and scores injured in a clash along the Mizoram-Assam inter-state border on July 26.

Both the states have refused to honour the summons that were issued by each other following the clashes. Mizoram has named Assam Chief Minister and other top officials in its FIR over the incident.

The first information report that was filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including “attempt to murder”, said Assam police personnel, acting under instructions from Mr Sarma himself, refused to have an “amicable dialogue” with the Mizoram police on the day of the incident.

Mr Sarma, on his part, has asked why a neutral agency can’t investigate the matter.

“Will be very happy to join in any investigation. But why the case is not being handed over to a neutral agency, especially when the place of occurrence is well within the constitutional territory of Assam? Have already conveyed this to @ZoramthangaCM ji,” Mr Sarma tweeted.

The Assam government has received support from opposition parties in the ongoing stand-off. A 19-member all-party delegation of Assam assembly, headed by Speaker Biswajit Daimary, will visit Delhi to request the Centre to resolve the state’s boundary dispute with Mizoram at the earliest.

The two states have been at odds over the boundary for decades, but Monday’s clashes flared up over an alleged construction by Mizoram in the disputed 198-square-mile stretch on the inter-state border — Lailapur under Dhalai of Cachar district in southern Assam and Vairengte in Kolasib district of northern Mizoram.

At least five companies (total of 500 troops) of the Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed in the violence-hit regions.

Two more companies are on standby.

Latest News Today – Rupee Weakens 13 Paise To Settle At 74.42 Against Dollar

Rupee Vs Dollar Today: The rupee settled at 74.42 against the dollar

A day after hitting its three-week high, the rupee weakened 13 paise against the US dollar on Friday, July 30, to settle at 74.42 (provisional), due to muted domestic equities, higher crude oil rates, and unabated foreign fund outflows. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic unit registered high volatility as it opened at 74.30 against the dollar and registered an intra-day high of 74.27. It witnessed a low of 74.44 during the session. In an early trade session, the local unit inched two paise to 74.27 against the greenback.

The domestic unit snapped its two-day winning streak and settled at 74.42, down 13 paise over its previous close. On Thursday, July 29, the local unit settled at 74.29 against the American currency. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading unchanged at 91.86.

On July 29, the domestic currency strengthened to its highest level in more than three weeks against the greenback tracking the U.S. Federal Reserve’s dovish stance. Gains in domestic equities also contributed to the rise in rupee’s performance. Yesterday, the rupee touched 74.22-74.23 – its strongest mark since July 6.

Mr Amit Pabari, MD, CR Forex:

”Globally, the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits remained near 400k in the week despite good job openings and ample attempts by many businesses to add staff. That apart US economic growth in the Q2 advanced to 6.5% but remained below forecasts of 8.5% pushing dollar index below 92 region and raising concerns over their economic outlook.

On the domestic front, rupee has been backed up only due to inflows on account of various IPO’s and stake sales. However, the activeness of the RBI downside along with the importer’s rush to cover the dollar shall keep the rupee under pressure.

Overall, for USDINR pair 74.20 remains crucial support to determine the way forward for the rupee. Till the time it trades above 74.20, any dips between 74.20-74.30 levels can be taken for buying, while for selling we suggest waiting for a bounce-back above 74.60-70 to cover near term exposures.”

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 66.23 points or 0.13 per cent lower at 52,586.84, while the broader NSE Nifty slipped 15.40 points or 0.1 per cent to 15,763.05.

Shrikant Chouhan, Executive Vice President, Equity Technical Research at Kotak Securities:

”The week has been volatile for the traders, as benchmark indices corrected sharply after a muted opening. However, once again the Nifty/ Sensex witnessed support near 15500/ 51900 levels and reversed quickly. Among Sectors, the Metal index outperformed during the week and rallied over 9 percent, whereas profit booking was seen in private banks and Energy stocks.

On the sectoral front, the texture suggests Metal stocks would continue to outperform in the near term. Any short-term corrections would be used to add quality Metal stocks with the medium-term time horizon.”

According to exchange data, the foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on July 29 as they offloaded shares worth Rs 866.26 crore. Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.25 per cent to $ 75.86 per barrel in futures trade.

Latest News Today – India Coronavirus Cases: India’s ‘R-Value’ Inching Up,

India has logged over 3.16 crore cases since the start of the pandemic.

New Delhi:

India’s ‘R-Value’ is inching up, and it’s a cause of concern, AIIMS Chief Dr Randeep Guleria told NDTV on Saturday, stressing on the need of aggressive containment strategies in the parts of the country that are witnessing a surge in fresh Covid infections. His remarks come amid concern over a third wave.

“Starting from .96, and going all the way up to 1, the rise in R-Value is a cause of concern. Simply put, this means that the chances of infection spreading from a person, who has Covid, to others have gone up. The areas which are witnessing this surge should bring in restrictions and employ “test, track, and treat” strategy to break the chain of transmission,” Dr Guleria explained. The R-Factor or number shows the effective reproductive number of a virus.

India on Friday recorded 44,230 fresh infections, the highest single-day surge in three weeks. The fresh spike in cases has been worrying in Kerala and some northeastern states. Forty-six districts in the country have a positivity rate of more than 10 per cent, the government said on Saturday.

This week, reports quoting the US health authority –  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – said that Delta variant of the coronavirus may cause more severe illness than all other known versions of the virus and spread as easily as chickenpox.

Explaining this in Indian context, Dr Guleria said: “Measles or chicken pox used to have R factor of 8 or more, which means one person could infect eight others. That sort of suggests that this virus is highly infectious. We saw that in our second wave, because whole families were getting infected. This happens with chicken pox also. In a similar manner, when one person has Delta variant, the whole family is vulnerable.”

With nearly 50 per cent of fresh Covid cases coming from Kerala, there’s a need to evaluate the surge in infections, Dr Guleria further stressed. “In the beginning, Kerala had set a precedent for others by managing the pandemic well. They also had an aggressive vaccination drive. Yet despite that, are witnessing a spike in a way that’s different from other parts of the country. This needs to be evaluated. Also, is there a variant behind the surge? Are containment strategies being aggressively followed – all this needs to be evaluated,” the AIIMS chief explained.

Neighbouring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also need to adopt aggressive testing strategy to break the chain of transmission, he added.

In Tamil Nadu, 66 per cent of people have developed anti-bodies, a recent sero survey showed. Yet the state has been witnessing a spike. The sero surveys, however, are not an indicator of herd immunity, Dr Guleria explained. “In Brazil, similar survey from a city showed 70 per cent of population had herd immunity. Yet we had a huge outbreak. We really don’t what’s the cut off in such cases, and also the antibodies gradually decrease over a period of time. It, however, shows that the chances of serious infections are lesser. For instance in Kerala, and UK, people are getting the infection, they may be spreading but they are not getting serious infection,” he said.

India has logged over 3.16 crore cases so far, and 4.23 lakh people have died due to Covid.

Latest News Today – Scientists Detect Light Being Ejected From Behind Black

Researchers have now been able to see light being ejected from behind a supermassive black hole, 800 million light-years away from Earth. These light waves — called “echoes” — were detected in the form of X-rays, according to a study published in the Nature journal. Over a century ago, Albert Einstein predicted through his Theory of General Relativity that the gravitational pull of black holes could be so strong that they can twist magnetic fields and bend light waves right around them, not just trap them.

According to Einstein’s theory, it should be possible to see light waves ejected out of a black hole’s backside. That theory has finally been proven correct.

Black holes were initially, or simplistically, believed to be empty spaces. However, the theory was later turned on its head when researchers carried out more detailed studies and found that a black hole is a very small area packed with a great amount of matter. Think of it as a star ten times bigger than our Sun squeezed into a sphere the size of a big city. This compression results in the formation of a very strong gravitational pull that even light cannot escape.

Previous studies have proven that light waves bend around a black hole. However, this is the first time scientists saw light waves coming out of the other side of a black hole.

Dan Wilkins, a Stanford University astrophysicist and the study’s co-author, said in a statement any light that goes into the black hole doesn’t come out, “So, we shouldn’t be able to see anything that’s behind the black hole. The reason we can see that is because the black hole is warping space, bending light and twisting magnetic fields around itself.”

Wilkins and his team used a special high-power X-ray telescope to study the black hole at the centre of the spiral galaxy, Zwicky 1. They found that light, in the form of X-rays, was being ejected out of the black hole’s backside, an unusual phenomenon.

Black holes are formed when massive stars explode into a supernova and collapse in on themselves.
