Latest News Today – Huge Section Of Road Caves In Under IIT Delhi Flyover,

A solid hunk of a road near a prestigious engineering college in south Delhi caved in this afternoon causing traffic disruptions.

A massive hole, in contrast to the smooth area around it, can be seen under the IIT flyover, forcing the traffic police to shut down vehicle movement on that stretch of the road.

“Due to the collapse of the road near IIT traffic light, vehicles going from IIT to Adhchini have been diverted to Katwaria Sarai. Please avoid using this route,” tweeted the Delhi Traffic Police.

The gap is being reported to be around 10-15 foot long and the drain water could be seen in the gaping hole. Policemen and traffic police are on the scene and have cordoned off the area. Officials from the city’s PWD are also present at the scene.

Latest News Today – Delhi Demands Reversal Of Rakesh Asthana’s Appointment

Rakesh Asthana got the appointment on Tuesday, just three days before his retirement.

New Delhi:

The assembly of Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Delhi has passed a resolution against the appointment of former CBI officer Rakesh Asthana as the Delhi Police Commissioner. The resolution has sought a reversal of the appointment from the Union Home Ministry, which controls the Delhi Police.

Mr Asthana got the appointment on Tuesday, just three days before he was to retire.

The ministry order said he was getting an “inter cadre deputation” from the Gujarat cadre to AGMUT, from where Delhi Police chiefs are picked.

The order also said his service was being extended “initially for a period of one year beyond the date of his superannuation… as a special case in public interest”.

“The BJP wants to say that all the commissioners appointed by the Modi government so far were useless, and for the first time in 7 years, they have brought a good officer,” said senior AAP leader Satyender Jain at the assembly.

“Supreme Court gave the ruling — six months should be left in the appointment of DG level, Rakesh Asthana had 4 days’ tenure left,” the  Delhi minister added.

The Congress has also slammed the appointment, saying it is in “direct contravention” of a Supreme Court judgment and questioned if any “quid pro quo” was involved in it.

“Not just is it an issue of inter-cadre appointment; the issue expands to another instance of blatant disregard towards the Supreme Court of India and the laws of the land,” senior Congress leader Pawan Khera has said.

The Supreme Court order these leaders cited came into the picture two months ago, when Mr Asthana was ruled out of the race for the post of CBI Director because he was about to retire.

At a meeting of the panel — headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — to select the CBI chief, Chief Justice NV Ramana reportedly cited a Supreme Court decision that officers with less than six months left in service should not be considered for police chief posts.

This ruled out at least two names on the government’s shortlist, including Mr Asthana, who was to retire on July 31.

Latest News Today – Rahul Gandhi Drives Tractor In Heart Of Delhi To Protest

Parliament has been adjourned several times over, among other things, the farm laws

New Delhi:

Rahul Gandhi today rode a new set of wheels to get to Parliament carrying farmers’ message and registering his protest against the three agricultural laws.

Seated at the wheel on a blazing red tractor, Rahul Gandhi, sporting a half-sleeved shirt, trousers and sandals, rode along confidently with a face mask on in the heart of Delhi, marking his protest against the controversial farm laws.

“I’ve brought farmers’ message to Parliament. They (Government) are suppressing voices of farmers and not letting a discussion take place in Parliament. They’ll have to repeal these black laws. The entire country knows these laws favour 2-3 big businessmen,” the 51-year-old leader was quoted saying by news agency ANI.

“As per government, farmers are very happy and those (protesting farmers) sitting outside are terrorists. But in reality, farmers’ rights are being snatched away,” he added.

The BJP claimed that farmers are being used as a political tool by the opposition.

“Rahul Gandhi is playing politics. Farmers are being used as a political tool. The centre has said if there are issues with the laws it is ready to rework them. They are ready for talks,” said BJP MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting since November at the three Delhi border points seeking repeal of the farm laws and a new law to guarantee minimum support price, or MSP, for crops.

Since the beginning of the monsoon session last week, Parliament has been adjourned several times over, among other things, the farm laws. Some Congress MPs said refused to let the House function until the matter was solved. They protested outside Parliament. The Shiromani Akali Dal also sought a debate.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar maintains the farm laws are beneficial, adding they can be discussed “point-wise” if farmers express the issues.

Several rounds of talks between farmers and the government have failed to break the deadlock over the contentious laws.

On Sunday, while calling the farmers of Jind (Haryana) revolutionaries, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait had hailed the decision of carrying out a tractor parade in protest against the centre’s farm laws on Independence Day.

Latest News Today – Karnataka Minister Murugesh Nirani In Delhi Amid Buzz

Over 500 Veerashaiva-Lingayat leaders have demanaded that BS Yediyurappa be allowed to continue (File)

New Delhi:

Amid heightened speculations about Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s exit, state minister Murugesh Nirani arrived in the national capital on Sunday apparently to meet BJP leaders, party sources said.

People close to Mr Nirani, however, claimed he is on a personal visit to the national capital.

Earlier in the day, when Mr Yediyurappa was asked about his future, he said he would take an appropriate decision once he receives directions from the party high command on his continuation in the post.

“By evening once it comes, you will also get to know about it. Once it comes I will take an appropriate decision,” the 78-year-old BJP leader said in response to a question on whether the directions from the high command were expected today.

The Lingayat strongman said he will abide by the party’s decision and his “lone target” would be toiling for the next two years and bringing the BJP back to power in Karnataka, where Assembly elections are due in 2023.

Mr Nirani, the Minister for Mines, hails from the Lingayat community like Mr Yediyurappa and is being seen as one of contenders for the chief ministerial post along with BJP general secretary CT Ravi, Home Minister in Karanataka government Basavaraj Bommai and Union minister Pralhad Joshi.

Meanwhile, over 500 Veerashaiva-Lingayat seers from different parts of Karnataka on Sunday demanded that Mr Yediyurappa should be allowed to continue in office.

Latest News Today – On CCTV, Couple Moves Bags With Delhi Woman’s Chopped

CCTV visuals from their neighbourhood show two persons carrying bags.

New Delhi:

A couple who was arrested in Delhi for allegedly killing an elderly woman, their neighbour, and throwing her chopped body into a drain, spent the entire night in her home cleaning the blood after chopping her body, the police said.

CCTV visuals from their neighbourhood show two persons carrying bags, which allegedly contained the chopped body, outside a building.

Anil Arya had borrowed Rs. 1.5 lakh from Kavita, his 72-year-old neighbour in outer Delhi’s Najafgarh. The event management professional and his wife allegedly killed her on the night on June 30 as Kavita had been asking them to return her money. The elderly woman was punched and strangled.

The chilling crime took place when she was alone at home.

The couple then cut her body into three pieces, filled them in three bags and threw them in a drain in Najafgarh, senior police officer Santosh Kumar Meena told NDTV.

The couple was at their neighbour’s home between 9 pm on June 30 to 5 am the next day.

Before dumping the body in the drain, they removed jewellery from the woman’s body. They pawned the jewellery at a popular finance company and took Rs. 70,000 in return, the police said.

“The woman’s daughter-in-law came to us with a complaint on July 3 saying she is missing and that her home is locked. On July 7, she came back to us saying the woman’s neighbour too is missing. We immediately filed a case of abduction and sent a team to track the neighbour,” Mr Meena said.

The couple was tracked down to Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly and arrested on Monday. Police retrieved the woman’s body from the drain on the same day.

Latest News Today – Delhi Stalker Hacks Class 11 Girl To Death With Axe,

Pravin fled the scene after attacking the 16-year-old with an axe but was arrested today.

New Delhi:

A 16-year-old girl has died after being attacked with an axe by a man who had been stalking her for months. The police arrested the 21-year-old accused today.

Pravin was arrested from his sister’s house in Palwal in Haryana, where he had fled after hacking the Class 11 student, a neighbour of his, yesterday.

“We received a PCR call at 1:30 pm from South Campus police station saying that a girl had been attacked with an axe. She was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away today. The accused was a stalker and has been caught,” South-West District Deputy Commissioner of Police Ingit Pratap Singh said today.

A resident of a shantytown in Delhi’s Moti Bagh area, Pravin, an unemployed person, had been stalking the girl for months, the police said. Upset at being pestered, she informed her father who works as a watchman. He then beat up Pravin, which enraged the young man further and decided to kill her.

Around a month ago, the police said, Pravin purchased an axe from RK Puram. Yesterday, as she headed home, he struck her face with the weapon and left the scene. She suffered an injury near her eyebrow, PTI reported.

Although the teenager was taken to the hospital, she succumbed shortly after.

“I was at the shop when I received the information. My father runs an electric shop and we have a fruit shop also. She used to sit in the shop from 10 am to 2 pm every day. The accused used to harass my sister and also said that he will kill her before her birthday,” the girl’s sister said, according to PTI.

The incident occurred on the same that a 22-year-old cab driver was arrested for allegedly killing his lover by slitting her throat in Delhi’s Dwarka area last week. He had suspected her of being in a relationship with someone else, police said.

A few weeks ago, the Delhi police arrested a 22-year-old gym trainer for allegedly stalking over 100 women on social media and sending obscene messages and video clips from fake accounts.

Latest News Today – As Delhi Unlocks Further, See What’s Allowed, What’s Not

Delhi Unlock: Metro trains, transport buses have already been allowed to operate with 50% capacity.

New Delhi:

The Delhi government has allowed academic gatherings and meetings at schools and colleges from Monday under the seventh phase of the easing of Covid lockdown in the national capital. Students, however, will not be allowed to physically attend educational institutions, the Arvind Kejriwal government said today.

“Only teachers and professors will be allowed inside educational institutions for online lectures and other administrative work,” said the notification issued by the government.

The exemption has also been given for Delhi Police and Army personnel to attend skill training classes. They will no longer require to take permission from the Department Of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to attend these programmes.

Not more than 50 per cent gathering will be allowed at auditorium and assembly hall of the school or educational institution, it said.

Spas, social, political, cultural, religious, and other such gatherings continue to remain prohibited.

Last week, the DDMA allowed stadiums and sports complexes to reopen for those training for national and international competitions or to hold such events. Spectators, however, will continue to be prohibited from entering the stadiums.

There will be strict adherence to standard operating procedure and other guidelines of the government, and compliance of Covid-appropriate behaviour, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had said.

Delhi Metro trains and public transport buses have already been allowed to operate with 50 per cent seating capacity under the phased easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Since it was placed under complete lockdown between April 19 and May 30, Delhi has been opening up in a phased manner as the infection rate continues to decline.

On Saturday, Delhi reported 76 new cases – the 11th consecutive day that the city has reported less than 100 new cases.

The positivity rate in the city currently stands at 0.09 per cent and there are 792 active cases.

Latest News Today – Rs 2,500 Crore Worth Heroin Seized Near Delhi. This Is

The police have seized 354 kg of drugs worth more than Rs 2,500 crore from a house in Faridabad.

New Delhi:

The Delhi Police seized the largest heroin haul ever when they discovered 354 kg of drugs worth more than Rs 2,500 crore at a house in Faridabad, which brought to light a massive international drug racket spread across Afghanistan, Europe and parts of India.

Four people have been arrested till now and officials are investigating a narco-terrorism angle in the case.

“The police have arrested an Afghani national, Hazrat Ali, a resident of Kashmir’s Anantnag, Rizwan Ahmad, and Gurjot Singh and Gurdeep Singh from Punjab’s Jalandhar. This racket is spread across Afghanistan, Europe and several parts of India,” said Special Commissioner of Delhi Police Special Cell Neeraj Thakur.

More than 100 kg of chemicals used for the heroin were also seized by the police. The overall international value of the drugs has been pegged at more than Rs 2,500 crore and the haul was intended to be sent to Punjab.

The police are investigating a narco-terrorism angle in the case.

The police, during investigation, found that drugs from Afghanistan — hidden in sack bags and cartons — were being sent through Iran’s Chabahar port into Maharashtra’s Mumbai via Jawahar Lal Nehru port.

“The drugs were then sent for processing to a factory near Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh and the heroin was prepared with the help of experts in Afghanistan. Following this, the drugs were sold in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir among other states,” the official said.

The accused arrested from Punjab said the mastermind behind the drug racket, Navpreet Singh, has been operating from Portugal.

“It was also found that some of the funds for the racket were coming from Pakistan… we can’t rule this out and will investigate this angle as well,” Mr Thakur said.

The special cell of the Delhi Police have arrested the accused involved in the international drugs racket.

Heroin weighing 283 kg and pegged at approximately Rs 2,000 crore in the international market, being smuggled into Mumbai from Iran by sea, was also seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence earlier this week.

Last month, the Narcotics Control Bureau in Delhi busted an international drug trafficking syndicate with the arrest of eight people and seizure of 22 lakh psychotropic tablets and at least 245 kg of similar drugs that were being allegedly peddled over the darknet.

Latest News Today – Facebook Has To Appear Before Delhi Panel In Riots

Facebook has been asked to appeal before Delhi Assembly’s panel on riots probe.

New Delhi:

Facebook can’t be compelled to answer on the issues of law and order, which are looked after by the central government, the Supreme Court said today as it asked the social media giant to appear before the Delhi Assembly panel in 2020 riots probe.

The Delhi Assembly committee has the “right to seek information on any matter related to peace and harmony without encroaching (the) domain of the central laws,” the top court underlined.

A three-judge bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy delivered the judgement in the case after a petition was filed by Ajit Mohan, Vice President of Facebook, India. Mr Mohan had challenged the notice issued to him by the panel probing the Delhi riots.

The panel can’t compel him to appear before it, Mr Mohan had argued, stressing that police and public order in the national capital come under the centre’s purview, and he holds the right to remain silent.

The court made some sharp remarks as it insisted: “Delhi Assembly Panel cannot don the role of (a) prosecuting agency and direct the filing of (a) chargesheet. The statements made by the assembly panel about making Facebook a co-accused in the chargesheet are outside its scope. The statements are hardly conducive to the fairness of the investigation.”

Facebook officials can choose to not answer questions as they appear before the panel, the court further underlined.

As Delhi government argued Mr Mohan had appeared before a parliamentary panel too, the central government backed Mr Mohan, and said the state assembly had “no power to issue notice, and Information Technology and laws relating to intermediaries fall within the domain of parliament.”

Technological age has produced digital platforms and “these are uncontrollable at times,” the Supreme Court observed today.

“Social media platforms have the power and potential to influence people across the border. Debates on these platforms, like Facebook, have the potential to polarise the society and less informed individuals may not verify the information and take it as gospel of truth,” the court said, commenting on the role of social media.

There were several technical disruptions as Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul was reading out the judgement; he went offline a few times and his voice could not be heard.

More than 50 people had died last year in February after the groups supporting the contentious citizenship law clashed with those opposing it.
