Intel ‘Alder Lake’ 12th Gen Core i9, Core i7, and Core i5 CPUs for gaming, workstation and enthusiast desktop PCs have been launched, following several months of teasers and architecture-level disclosures. Six new models have been launched, all of which are unlocked and overclockable. These new CPUs are the first of the ‘Alder Lake’ family, and introduce a mix of heterogenous Performance and Efficiency cores for the first time in consumer X86 PCs. This also marks the advent of DDR5 RAM and the PCIe 5.0 interconnect standard. Intel has not yet announced the availability of 12th Gen CPUs for other segments such as laptops, however the company has said that additional desktop CPU models will follow in early 2022.

New 12th Gen ‘Alder Lake‘ CPUs will have a mix of two different core types, which Intel is calling ‘Performance Hybrid Architecture’. This works in much the same way that ARM-based smartphone processors have been developed for several years now. This single architecture will serve all Intel’s consumer CPU categories, with different mixes of cores types. All 12th Gen Core CPUs will be manufactured on the newly renamed 10m ‘Intel 7’ process.

Prices in the US range from $589 (approximately Rs. 43,380 before taxes) for the top-end Core i9-12900K to $264 (approximately Rs. 19,445 before taxes) for the Core i5-12600KF. Models without graphics capabilities are priced slightly lower than their counterparts with integrated GPUs. These are prices per 1000 units, and might not reflect retail prices. Intel has said it expects robust retail availability despite the global semiconductor shortage, and multiple PC OEMs are also on board to ship pre-built desktops. Official prices in India are yet to be confirmed but some retail listings without prices appeared online as early as last week.

The new ‘Golden Cove’ Performance (P) cores succeed the ‘Willow Cove’ cores in the current ‘Tiger Lake’ architecture, while the ‘Gracemont’ Efficiency (E) core architecture can be considered a descendant of the erstwhile Intel Atom CPU range. Intel’s first hybrid CPU, codenamed ‘Lakefield‘, was launched in 2020 but has been seen in very few actual shipping devices. The 12th Gen desktop Core i9 CPUs announced so far feature 16 cores (8 P + 8 E), while Core i7 models get 12 cores (8 P + 4 E) and Core i5 models have 10 cores (6 P + 4 E).

While P cores are intended to handle high-impact lightly threaded workloads, background tasks and more multi-threaded tasks can be delegated to E cores. Also, P cores continue to benefit from Hyper-Threading, allowing two threads to run simultaneously, but E cores do not, so 12th Gen Core CPUs will have non-linear core/thread counts. To balance workloads and ensure that the optimal tasks are assigned to each type of core, Intel has developed a new dynamic scheduler that it calls Thread Director. This requires Windows 11, and Intel says that performance will not be as optimised on Windows 10 or other operating systems. Thread Director will first favour the P cores, then the E cores, and only once those are saturated will threads be assigned to the Hyper-Threading capacity of the P cores.

Each P core has its own L2 cache, while clusters of four E cores share their L2 caches. These feed in to a common L3 cache, allowing for quick transfers of data and low latency in workloads optimal for each core type. CPUs without the -F suffix will also feature integrated Intel UHD 770 graphics, based on the Xe LP architecture.

The new Z690 platform controller has been introduced, and 12th Gen Core desktop CPUs use a new, larger LGA1700 socket. Platform-level features for this generation include the first use of DDR5 RAM, with official support going up to 128GB (dual-channel) at 4800MT/s wit h XMP 3.0 profiles. DDR4-3200 RAM is also supported, and motherboard manufacturers will decide which standard to go with on each model. Alder Lake CPUs support up to 16 lanes of PCIe 5.0, doubling the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0. New CPU and RAM overclocking controls have also been introduced.

The Core i9-1200K is described as “the world’s best gaming processor” and Intel says it delivers significant gains in gaming as well as content creation workloads compared to the octa-core Core i9-11900K. It can run at up to 5.2GHz. The two different core types run at different Base and Turbo speeds: 2.4-3.9GHz for the E cores and 3.2-5.1GHz for the P cores. Base and peak power ratings are 125W and 241W respectively.

Intel claims 19 percent gen-on-gen performance improvements for the P cores. The Core i9-12900K is said to deliver 50 percent higher multi-threaded performance than the Core i9-11900K at a slightly lower 241W peak power consumption compared to 250W. At the rated 125W stock TDP, performance is up to 30 percent better, while the same level of performance can be achieved within a 65W power limit. When gaming and streaming simultaneously, Intel claims up to 84 percent better frame rates. When exporting edited video while processing RAW images, that figure is said to be 47 percent. Even running these tasks sequentially rather than simultaneously is said to be faster.

The rest of the lineup includes the Core i9-12900KF with nearly identical specifications; as well as the Core i7-12700K, Core i7-12700KF, Core i5-12600K, and Core i5-12600KF. The -F suffix indicates a lack of integrated graphics capabilities, while the -K suffix indicates that these are all unlocked and overclockable models. Lower-end versions of these CPUs should be launched in Q1 next year, potentially as early as CES 2022.

Amazon’s Echo range of smart speakers is popular for its simplicity, ease of setup and use, and of course, the ability to access information and audio-based content through voice commands. However, in my opinion, the Echo Show range is far more impressive, and deserves a lot more attention for adding visual cues and display-based capabilities to the range. While there have been a few Echo Show products already, the latest is the company’s most expensive and technologically impressive one yet.

Priced at Rs. 24,999, the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is now the biggest model in the product family . Like the rest of the range, the Echo Show 10 is a smart display and smart speaker in one, with a 10.1-inch screen and a three-driver speaker system on the base. However, the device has a unique party trick – its screen rotates mechanically to face you, letting you clearly see what’s being displayed from anywhere in the device’s peripheral range of vision.

While this might sound impressive, how does it fare in practice? I’ve put the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) through several tests to see just how well this unique smart device works, and here’s my review.

Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) design and specifications

While earlier Echo Show devices have been single-piece units with a screen at the front and a speaker system at the back, the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) changes things around quite radically. This device is essentially two separate parts; the speaker system and other hardware is in the base unit, while the 10.1-inch 1280×800-pixel screen is fixed to the top of it. This gives the impression of them being two separate units, despite being firmly attached together.

The screen can be manually tilted upwards or downwards for easier viewing and camera orientation, depending on the height at which the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is placed. The bottom of the base unit is motorised, allowing it to rotate in a full circle to face in any direction. The power socket for the included adapter is at the bottom of the device, with a small gap for the cable to pass through, which leaves the rotating mechanism unhindered.

There’s no power switch; when plugged in, the Echo Show 10 is always on. This is a large smart display and speaker meant for use at home, and therefore needs to be plugged into a wall power outlet at all times – there’s no battery.

Although the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) can rotate 360 degrees to face any direction, you’ll have to ensure that it’s placed with enough clearance to move around unhindered, such as on a coffee table or kitchen counter. Naturally, it won’t be able to do a full circle in some positions, such as against a wall or with objects placed right next to it.

It’s possible to adjust the range of motion so the speaker knows when to stop turning; this can be done through the motion settings, and is easy enough to configure. You can also set an idle position, which is the default direction that the Echo Show 10 will face when in standby. It’s also worth pointing out that motion and tracking relies on good light, so the rotation mechanism is disabled in dark or poorly lit rooms.

The Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) has two 1-inch tweeters and a single 3-inch woofer for sound, all built into its fabric-wrapped base. The 10.1-inch touch screen has wide borders all around, with the 13-megapixel camera in the top-right corner just above the screen. There are buttons at the top to adjust the volume and mute the far-field microphones, along with a sliding shutter that physically blocks the camera for privacy as needed. This isn’t a very high-resolution screen, but it’s sharp and clean enough for basic viewing, and serves the purpose of showing Alexa’s visual cues well enough.

The brain of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is Alexa, Amazon’s constantly evolving voice assistant. While voice commands and responses are the key feature of Alexa, the screen on the Echo Show 10 provides visual prompts, hints, and some basic video content to support interactions. You’ll see album art and track details, weather reports with icons and data, images and text related to searches, and more. You can also use voice commands to play video content from YouTube (which plays through the built-in browser) or Amazon Prime Video.

You can independently visit websites through the browser, or even access Netflix natively on the device. The Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is a capable smart display, providing more visual content than competing devices from other brands. Alexa’s ever-improving skills and capabilities as well as language capabilities now comprehensively extend to Hindi language commands in addition to English.

The camera also means that the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is a capable device for video calls, using Alexa’s native video chat feature to let you communicate with family and friends who are logged in to the Alexa app on their smartphones or have Echo devices with video chat capabilities.

Additionally, you can also ‘drop in’ to your own home from anywhere through the Alexa app logged in to your account on your smartphone; this worked well to quickly talk to family members at home or even monitor the house remotely. Other communication features such as announcements and voice calls are also available, and you can set the screen to serve as a digital photo frame for your pictures as well.

Like before, you can stream music through linked services such as Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, and JioSaavn; control linked smart appliances such as light bulbs, air purifiers, and cleaning robots; fetch information from the Web; use household tools such as timers, recipes, and shopping lists; and activate various skills that allow Alexa to interact with content and brands.

Alexa itself is now able to understand more voice commands and work more skills than before, and generally offers an increasingly smooth experience. All of the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)’s features, including remote monitoring, communications, and basic settings, can be controlled through the Alexa app for iOS and Android. The app also allows for the configuration of smart home appliances and other Echo and Fire TV products, as well as letting the Echo Show 10 seamlessly integrate with your existing smart home setup.

All of this is suitably supported by the screen motion features; the device rotates to face you based on where your voice commands come from, and was also able to follow my gaze fairly accurately when I was watching video content or on video calls. While you might consider this signature feature of the Echo Show 10 to be unnecessary and gimmicky, I found it to work quite well and made using the screen of the device much more convenient. This is a unique feature as far as smart devices go, and definitely made for an interesting user experience.

The smart features and display-based capabilities of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) are impressive, but this device is a smart speaker at its core. Even so, sound quality on the speaker isn’t quite as impressive as the price might suggest. That’s not to say the Echo Show 10 sounds bad; it’s reasonably good considering its size and form factor, but doesn’t quite match up to our current top pick, the Rs. 7,999 Google Nest Audio.

Much of this has to do with the fact that the screen and the unique rotating mechanism are the centrepieces of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). Although powered by three drivers – two tweeters and a woofer – the screen itself seemed to block and muffle sound a bit, making for a somewhat odd listening experience even at moderate volumes. At high volumes, I found the sound just a bit shrill and unpleasant, while it was decent at low volumes when within five feet of the speaker. Over longer distances, such as across a room or even off to the sides of the speaker, the sound was a bit awkward.

While the soft and pleasant tunes of children’s music – particularly tracks by kids’ artist Blippi – did sound decent, the electronic jazz track Forces… Darling by Koop felt a bit dull when far away from the speaker, with the quick beats sounding a bit muffled. The price and specifications might suggest that this is a capable smart speaker in terms of sound quality, but it is best used in small spaces for a single listener, rather than considered a capable option for a large space.

I found that creating a bit of space all around the speaker did improve the sound a bit by allowing it more room to breathe, per se, but placement for such a large device is a tricky thing and you might not have that luxury in certain situations. Users looking for better sound quality will be better served by the Google Nest Audio or Amazon Echo Studio; sound quality is definitely not the Echo Show 10’s strong point.

Verdict

The idea of a combined smart display and speaker isn’t new, but the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) pushes the boundaries of what you can expect from this segment, albeit at a premium price. Its ability to turn to face you, follow you around, and ensure that you have a clear view of the screen from practically anywhere in its field of vision makes using it a unique experience. Although a bit gimmicky, the feature lends itself well to the visual experience, and is a pretty good look into the future of smart displays.

However, at Rs. 24,999, this is an expensive device, and seems particularly so when you consider that sound quality is below average and bested by more affordable options. If those are key considerations, you might want to consider the Google Nest Audio instead, as it offers the full smart experience (minus the display, of course). The Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is worth considering for its excellent display-based features, the continuously-improving Alexa voice assistant, and the futuristic experience of having the screen follow your gaze.

The two ThinkPad L-series laptop models come with the latest AMD Ryzen Mobile processors, while the two Chromebook models from Lenovo come with up to 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processors.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4, ThinkPad L13 Gen 2, ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2, IdeaPad 5i Chromebook, IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook: Price

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 starts at EUR 2,099 (roughly Rs. 1.86 lakh), the the ThinkPad L13 Gen 2 starts at EUR 649 (roughly Rs. 57,600), and the ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2 starts at EUR 749 (roughly Rs. 66,500). These will be available for purchase from August this year.

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook starts at EUR 399 (roughly Rs. 35,400) and will be available from July in Sand and Storm Grey colours. The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook also starts at EUR 399 but will be available this month in Abyss Blue and Iron Grey colours.

As of now, Lenovo has not shared details on international availability for its new laptop and Chromebook models.

The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Gen 2 offers up to full-HD resolution and optional touch interface while the ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2 comes with only a touchscreen full-HD display. Under the hood, they are powered by up to AMD Ryzen 5000 Pro series processors with integrated AMD Radeon graphics. They can be equipped with up to 16GB DDR4 RAM clocked at 3,200MHz and up to 1TB PCIe SSD. Both come with 46Whr batteries that can last for a little over 10 hours. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.1, an HDMI 2.0 port, two USB Type-C 3.2 ports, two USB Type-A 3.2 ports, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The new IdeaPad models from Lenovo run Google’s Chrome OS and come with up to Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPUs. The IdeaPad 5i Chromebook features a 14-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) touchscreen IPS display with 300 nits of peak brightness. The IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook, on the other hand, comes with a 13.3-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) IPS touchscreen display with 250 nits of peak brightness. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook can be equipped with up to 8GB LPDDR4 RAM and up to a 512GB SSD. The IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook is offered in a single 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 512GB PCle SSD version. Both the laptops come with dual 2W stereo speakers with Waves Audio tuning. Battery life is said to be up to 10 hours for the Chromebook models. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook weighs 1.42 kg and the IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook weighs 1.35 kg.

Latest News Today – Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 for Entry-Level Windows 10


Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 compute platform was launched on Monday as the company’s next-generation system-on-chip (SoC) for always-on, always-connected, entry-level Windows PCs and Chromebooks. The new Snapdragon platform is positioned as the successor to Snapdragon 7c that Qualcomm unveiled in 2019, and there are many similarities between the two. Qualcomm claims that the new Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 chipset is capable of delivering up to 10 percent higher system performance than competitive platforms and up to two times the battery life of typical entry-level laptops with over 19 hours of continuous use on a single charge. The new offering is also designed to enhance camera and audio experiences on new laptops and Chromebooks to support remote working and learning environments.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 will be commercially available starting this summer, Qualcomm said in a press statement. The chipset will be compatible with both Windows 10 and Chrome OS devices.

Qualcomm has designed the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 as a competitor against the Intel Celeron N4020, Intel Pentium Silver N5030, and MediaTek MT8183. The chipset is claimed to be up to 60 percent more performance efficient over the competition and is aimed to be a solution for developing laptops targeting educators, students, first line workers, and everyday light consumers.

In terms of specifications, the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 has an octa-core Kryo 468 CPU based on 64-bit architecture — with a clock speed of up to 2.55GHz. Although the CPU is the same as the one that was powering the original Snapdragon 7c launched in December 2019, it supports a higher clock speed on the new chipset. Both original and new Snapdragon chips are also based on the 8nm process technology.

The Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 comes with a 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 255 image signal processor (ISP) that supports dual cameras of up to 16-megapixel resolution or up to a 32-megapixel single camera. The ISP also includes support for up to 10-bit colour depth video recording.

For audio, the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 has Qualcomm Aqstic technology, along with Qualcomm Voice Suite audio processing that is claimed to enhance audio delivery. The new Snapdragon chipset also supports video playback of up to 4K HDR10 and H.265 (HEVC), H.264 (AVC), and VP9 codec support. There is also Qualcomm aptX audio playback support.

The Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 has an Adreno GPU and a Qualcomm Hexagon 692 DSP. The chipset also comes with a Snapdragon X15 LTE modem.

Qualcomm has provided support for up to QHD display at 60Hz refresh rate. Further, the SoC includes dual-channel LPDDR4x RAM, eMMC 5.1 or UFS 2.1 storage.

Connectivity-wise, the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NavIC, BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS, and SBAS. There is also the Snapdragon X15 LTE modem that supports 2x20MHz downlink carrier aggregation and up to 4×4 MIMO.

In addition to the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2, Qualcomm brought a new Snapdragon Developer Kit for Windows 10 PCs. It has been designed in collaboration with Microsoft to boost development of apps for Windows 10 devices powered by Snapdragon compute platforms. The developer kti is claimed to be optimised for solutions including Zoom to offer users an alternative to affordable Intel Atom-powered laptops.

Latest News Today – Intel 11th Gen Core ‘Tiger Lake-H’ Gaming, Workstation


Intel has launched 10 new 11th Gen laptop CPUs based on the ‘Tiger Lake’ architecture, for high-end gaming and workstation laptops, including commercial vPro-enabled models. Intel promises desktop-quality performance at the high end, with up to 19 percent better gen-on-gen multi-threaded performance. plus platform-level improvements thanks to PCIe 4.0 support. These new H-series CPUs have rated TDPs of up to 65W and join the previously launched low-power Tiger Lake CPUs which are aimed at thin-and-light laptops for everyday use. However, Intel says that at least 30 upcoming laptops based on the new Tiger Lake-H CPUs will also be less than 20mm thick.

The new 11th Gen Core CPUs feature a new UHD Graphics integrated GPU based on Intel’s new Xe-LP architecture, with 32 execution units. Platform features include Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E support. At launch time, the family will include Core i9 and Core i7 models with eight cores each, as well as six-core Core i5 models. There are also two Xeon W-series models among the five that are aimed at commercial laptops, and these support Intel’s vPro business platform which includes the new Thread Detection Technology and Control-flow Enforcement Technology capabilities which are said to be able to defend against ransomware and cryptomining attacks.

Tiger Lake processors use the ‘Willow Cove’ core architecture which is fabricated using Intel’s 10nm SuperFin process. The platform features 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes allowing for high-bandwidth connections to a discrete GPU as well as an NVMe SSD. Dual eDP graphics pathways will allow for laptops with built-in secondary displays. Memory support goes up to DDR4-3200.

The top-end Core i9-11980HK is billed as the world’s best mobile gaming processor and will be seen in what Intel is calling “halo enthusiast” laptops. It’s fully unlocked and overclockable, depending on what kind of enclosures and cooling apparatus OEMs equip their designs with. It has eight cores with Hyper-Threading and 24MB of L3 cache memory. It has a 2.6GHz base frequency and can run at up to 3.3GHz with a 65W configurable TDP, or up to 5GHz on two cores using Intel’s Turbo Boost Max 3.0 feature when thermal conditions allow.

With this new generation, Intel says buyers can expect to see more 17-inch gaming laptops in the market with 1440p likely to become a common display resolution, as well as 1080p models with refresh rates of up to 360Hz. Intel says over 80 designs will be announced by OEMs, many of which are expecting to be gaming laptops and could also feature Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3050 and GeForce RTX 3050 Ti discrete GPUs, which have been announced at the same time.

Latest News Today – Dell Inspiron Series Laptops Refreshed With 11th Gen


Dell Inspiron series of laptops have been redesigned from the ground up with new look and colours “inspired by nature”, the company said on Tuesday. Dell adds the new Inspiron lineup offers the latest PC innovations and adapts to “learn- or work-from-anywhere lifestyle”. The redesigned series includes Dell Inspiron 13, Dell Inspiron 14, Dell Inspiron 15, Dell Inspiron 16 Plus, and Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptops. They come with slim bezels, spacious touchpad, larger keycaps, and other such enhancements to improve usability.

There are a host of new colour options for the Dell Inspiron series of laptops and the company says all the painted parts use low volatile organic compound (VOC) waterborne paint. Additionally, Dell says that 100 percent recycled paper is used for the packaging tray and that other packaging materials are made from up to 90 percent recycled materials. All the laptops run Windows 10.

Dell Inspiron series price, availability

The Dell Inspiron 13 starts at $599 (roughly Rs. 45,200) and is available in the US (retail only). For now, India availability has not been shared. The laptop is offered in Peach Dust and Platinum Silver colours. The Inspiron 14 and Inspiron 15 start at $549 (roughly Rs. 41,400) and will be available in India from June 8. The Inspiron 14 has Peach Dust and Platinum Silver colours, while the Inspiron 15 has Mist Blue and Platinum Silver colours. Dell Inspiron 16 Plus starts at $949 (roughly Rs. 71,600) and will be available in India from July 26 in a single Mist Blue colour option. Lastly, the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 starts at $729 (roughly Rs. 55,000) and will be available in the US starting May 4. Its Intel variant is offered in Platinum Silver finish, while the AMD variant is offered in Mist Blue and Pebble Green colours. Its India availability has not been confirmed yet.

Dell Inspiron 13 specifications

Dell Inspiron 13 (5310) features a 13.3-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. There are options for a full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) display or a QHD+ (2,560×1,600 pixels) display, both of which have 300 nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, the Inspiron 13 can be equipped with up to an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-11370H CPU, paired with up to Nvidia GeForce MX450 GPU with 2GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. The Dell Inspiron 13 supports up to 16GB of LPDDR34x RAM and up to 2TB of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. Audio is handled by stereo speakers with Waves MaxxAudio Pro tuning, and the laptop with a dual-array microphone setup as well. Connectivity options include an HDMI port, a USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. You also get Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth v5.1. It comes with up to a 64Whr battery and a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button.

Dell Inspiron 14, Inspiron 15 specifications

Dell Inspiron 14 (5410) comes with a 14-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) display with options between 250 nits or 300 nits of peak brightness. The Inspiron 15 (5510) comes with a 15.6-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) display with options between 250 nits and 300 nits of peak brightness as well as touch and non-touch display. The laptops are powered by up to an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-11370H CPU and up to Nvidia GeForce MX450 GPU. They can be equipped with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 1TB of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for storage. Connectivity options on the Inspiron 14 and Inspiron 15 include an HDMI port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen2 port, two USB Type-A 3.2 Gen1 ports, an SD card reader, a headphone/ microphone combo jack, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth (version?). There are two speakers and dual digital microphone array. Both laptops are backed by up to a 54Whr battery.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus specifications

Dell Inspiron 16 (7610) packs a 16-inch 3K (3,072×1,920 pixels) anti-glare LED backlight display with 300 nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, it comes with an 11th Generation Intel Core H-Series processor and up to Nvidia GeForce GTX or GeForce RTX graphics. The Dell Inspiron 16 Plus can be equipped with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 2TB of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. For connectivity, you get an HDMI port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, an SD card reader, and a mic/ headphone combo jack. It comes with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth (version?) connectivity as well. The laptop comes with up to an 86Whr battery and its audio is handled by two speakers tuned by Waves MaxxAudio Pro.

Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7415) comes in Intel and AMD configurations. Both include a 14.0-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) touch display. Under the hood, the Intel variant can be equipped with up to an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor and up to Nvidia GeForce MX350 GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 graphics memory. The AMD variant comes with up to a Ryzen 7 5700U CPU and Radeon graphics. The Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 comes with up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 2TB of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. Connectivity options include an HDMI port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. You also get Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth v5.0. Both models are backed by up to a 54Whr battery.

Latest News Today – Everything You Need to Know About Intel’s 11th Gen


Intel’s 11th Gen ‘Rocket Lake’ Core i9, Core i7, and Core i5 desktop CPUs should soon be available for everyone across the world to buy. This isn’t another minor 14nm update, like we’ve seen for the past several years, as Intel struggled with 10nm manufacturing capacity. Instead of prolonging the wait further, Intel has taken the surprising step of leveraging its relatively more modern 10nm ‘Ice Lake’ architecture, but has backported it to a 14nm manufacturing process to get it out into the market. This approach allows the company to keep using its established and mature manufacturing capabilities while bringing new features and improvements to market. Considering all this, there’s a lot that gamers, enthusiasts, overclockers, and even casual users will want to know.

Gadgets 360 caught up with Marcus Kennedy, General Manager, Gaming Division, Client Computing Group at Intel, to talk about the 11th Gen desktop Core CPU launch, his outlook for gaming, and what’s in store for anyone who might be considering an upgrade.

Gadgets 360: So what’s new with Rocket Lake, and what should enthusiasts be most excited about?

Marcus Kennedy: With Rocket Lake, we know that we are going to be delivering unmatched speeds and better game performance on release, and also greater efficiency and increased workflow productivity with our first new core architecture on desktops in five years. We’ve got 19 percent IPC (Instructions Per Clock) improvement, generation over generation. We’ve got 50 percent better integrated graphics performance as we are including the new XE integrated architecture that was launched with Tiger Lake earlier this year. But we’re also bringing AI for the first time to the S series (desktop segment) which helps enable a lot of incredible performance on things like object detection and speech recognition as well.

Gadgets 360: Can you talk more about the AI features?

Kennedy: AI inference in general is what I’m talking about. Part of what that does and how we’re bringing that to market is through the GNA, the Gaussian Neutral Accelerator, in the silicon that enables these AI usages, and that’s inside the integrated graphics.

Gadgets 360: So is there anything major that we lose out on by not having Rocket Lake using 10nm?

Kennedy: We’ve backported the 10nm process onto 14nm, so though the transistors are larger we are still taking advantage of the core and graphics IP benefits. Are we losing out on any features? Well, no, but when we do make that jump to 10nm, obviously you would gain the benefits of the greater efficiencies that you get with scaling down.

Gadgets 360: Intel has been talking a lot about the 12th Gen (Alder Lake) which is coming up later this year. Where does that leave the 11th Gen, really? Has this been a lot of effort just for a temporary stopgap generation?

Kennedy: Well no, I wouldn’t call it a stopgap. We are really focused on delivering an annual cadence of products, and you can expect from us a new processor every year. Within some of those jumps you’ll see a new architecture or a new node. This is our normal state of being; continuing to keep up with the market, delivering new and exciting performance benefits year over year. Particularly with the gaming market, they demand performance. They want a refresh between two and three years, and developers are trying to bring the best experiences to gamers. The annual cadence really allows us to keep up with the demand.

Gadgets 360: You’re talking about an annual cadence but Intel has already said the 12th Gen will come out before the end of 2021, and it’s going to introduce its own new socket and chipsets. Where does that leave buyers?

Kennedy: Rocket Lake is absolutely an exciting product; it drives performance benefits not just gen over gen but also over the competition, and so for buyers who want the best product on the market, the highest clock speeds, the AI features, you absolutely want to buy this now. The [upgrade cycle] is 2-3 years; there are going to be new features every year. I think what we’re doing with the 11th Gen is making sure that we have an offering for the market to bring things like PCIe Gen 4, the AI, and the integrated graphics.

Gadgets 360: Considering that this is a big change in architecture, but you can still use a Rocket Lake CPU with a previous-gen motherboard, what should customers expect if they’re going to upgrade?

Kennedy: As with any new product, it is always best to upgrade everything if you want every feature and the best performance. In this case with the 500-series chipsets you get double the USB connectivity speed, support for PCIe Gen 4 lanes, and things like memory overclocking on all the 500-series chipsets, not just [the top-end Z590]. If you want Wi-Fi 6E and Thunderbolt 4, you’ve got to go with the 500 series. PCIe Gen 4 is enabled through the CPU, and so if you want Gen 4 you do have to upgrade to Rocket Lake. If you’re okay with PCIe Gen 3, just CPU overclocking, and your current USB speeds, it’s okay to stay with the current 400 series.

Gadgets 360: The top-end Core i9-11900K has eight cores, down from 10 on the Core i9-10900K. What are you doing to combat any perception that it’s not as great as the previous generation, or the competition which goes up to 16 cores?

Kennedy: Rocket lake, gen over gen, has multiple real-world usage improvements. The 19 percent IPC improvement is [accounting for] eight cores vs 10 cores, and you’re able to see improvements in gameplay performance up to double digits; you’re also able to see increases in things like workflow productivity. Now I think we all know that most applications don’t scale up with the number of cores. You top out at somewhere close to 8-10 cores. Some applications do continue on, and if you’re running nothing but multi-threaded applications then maybe sticking with Comet Lake is the right thing for you, but the vast majority of usages actually don’t scale that high. Even for people who are using multiple threads, you’re more than likely going to see an improvement in performance by upgrading to Rocket Lake. The second thing we’ve been able to do is bring some of that core and graphics IP that you don’t get in the previous generation – the Xe architecture; things we’re able to bring to market on AI; smoother gameplay performance.

Gadgets 360: And what’s new with the refreshed 10th Gen CPUs that are also launching? What’s changing?

10th Gen CPUs are fully compatible with the 500-series as well as the 400-series motherboards. The 10th Gen is being refreshed for Core i3 and below, but Core i5 and up is going to be 11th Gen. It’s a refresh of the lower end of the stack in order to help take advantage of some of the benefits of 500-series boards, bringing some of those features to more cost-conscious consumers.

Gadgets 360: So this division of the stack at the Core i3 to Core i5 point, with the previous and current generations, is that just for launch time or is that permanent?

Kennedy: Well, all I can say here is that is what we have at launch time. I’m not going to comment on potential SKU-ing that we’re going to do later. We are always focused on listening our community. We’ve kind of leaned in on places like Reddit, doing “Ask You Anythings”. We have constant social monitoring, and so if our community speaks really loudly, we are listening.

Gadgets 360: A lot of the features that we​’ve talked about appeal to gamers and enthusiasts, the Core i7 and Core i9 buyers. What can people lower down the stack expect?

Kennedy: We’re addressing the Core i3 and Pentium SKUs, through the Comet Lake 10th Gen refresh. With the 11th Gen Core i5, we absolutely see the same benefits. That double-digit performance increase in games, the increases in productivity and creation applications; those are absolutely up and down the stack. The higher IPC gen-over-gen and the introduction of the AI feature sets that enable this, and we think that down the stack, it can be an even more valuable proposition, because your price-to-performance ratio looks really good.

Gadgets 360: One of the key advantages is the Xe graphics, but are you still putting out ‘F’ SKUs that don’t have integrated graphics at all? Is there anything buyers would lose out on?

Kennedy: We listen to our community and customers, and there are some who don’t care about the integrated graphics and who want only to use discrete graphics. If you get that SKU, there will be some things that you lose out on with some of the AI features, but users who are doing this are bringing in top-of-the-line discrete graphics cards, so they might be ok with that.

With Rocket Lake’s integrated graphics you actually get the ability to do 4K on normal streaming applications like Netflix, whereas entry-level graphics cards don’t enable that, so that might not be the right thing for you. One other thing that you wouldn’t get is faster image processing, even if you have a high-end 3D card, because the localised integrated graphics allows the application to decide where that workload’s going to run. If the compute happens more locally, it happens faster versus having to go over the [PCIe] bus. So you might see faster image processing when you have the integrated graphics.

Gadgets 360: Those ‘F’ SKUs were introduced largely to help Intel deal with its supply constraints and we’ve seen for quite a few years that CPUs have been hard to find or overpriced. Is that changing now?

Kennedy: First, I’ll challenge the notion that it was due to supply constraints, I was part of some of those conversations and the main reason we did it is we realised that there was a part of that market that just didn’t want integrated graphics and who really fully pair with high-end discrete graphics. It had very little to do with supply itself and more to do with what consumers demanded.

I don’t think anybody foresaw the explosion of demand that we had last year, and that’s continuing into this year. The kind of new normal is people wanting to upgrade, wanting the best thing while they’re stuck at home. With the Rocket Lake launch, we’ve made sure to increase our manufacturing capacity so this is the largest supplied processor launch on the desktop that we’ve ever had. Demand continues to skyrocket, and it is possible that there’s way more demand out there than we expect, but we’re really confident that we’ll be able to supply the demand.

Gadgets 360: Is this now finally the end of 14nm across all of Intel’s CPU offerings?

Kennedy: 14nm has had a great run, right? Comet Lake is still a great product; we’re still selling it in the market. What 14nm has allowed us to do with Rocket lake and with the manufacturing efficiency that we’ve been able to tune over the years, is maintain clock speeds while bringing a lot of 10nm transistor goodness to the market. And so [Rocket Lake is] kind of a sweet spot of 10nm plus 14nm. With the core and graphics IP performance, we think this is the right transition point. And yeah, the 12th Gen on desktop [will be on 10nm].

Gadgets 360: Do you think the supply and demand issues that Intel had long before the pandemic began are resolved?

Kennedy: We have absolutely looked at what happened in the past and corrected that through capacity planning.

Overclocking features and improvements

 

Gadgets 360: Can you talk a little bit about what’s new with overclocking and specifically the decision to open up more features to the lower end chipsets. Why now, and what exactly changes?

Kennedy: You’re specifically referring to memory overclocking right? We are now offering memory overclocking beyond the Z chipsets, into the H570 and B560. If you want CPU overclocking it’s still a Z chipset [exclusive]. The reason why now, is it’s about our community. Between the last generation launch and this generation, we heard loud and clear that memory overclocking is something our community wanted and so we delivered it further down the stack on H and B, which are more for price-conscious consumers. We’re offering a new integrated memory controller that helps enable that too. The last thing is we also now have real-time memory frequency support so you can actually make changes to the DDR4 frequency in real time too, toggling between the boot frequency and XMP profile, which is super important if you really want to fine-tune it. Some of the other features you get are AVX2 and AVX512 offset, as well as an AVX enable/disable option.

And this is really important, because there are consumers out there who don’t want AVX on when they’re running certain applications. They want to turn that off and use that horsepower somewhere else. Others do want it, because with things like AVX512, you actually really get the ability, if you’ve got the right cooling solution, to really dial it up and crank the most out of your system. Giving that power and control back to the gamer, the overclocker, is really important to us.

Gadgets 360: Okay, so what should overclockers expect with the changes that have come from the new architecture? Are there any major new characteristics in terms of heat, power draw, cooling you’d require, the targets you can hope to achieve?

Kennedy: Well, I can’t promise anything because as you know all these things tend to be variable, but what I can say is with the top end higher bin, you can expect a couple of bins’ worth of performance as you start to start to turn it up. Now for those who do invest in a high-end cooling solution, we know through testing that you’ll be able to crank even more. It really depends on your configuration and making sure that your motherboard has all those things enabled as well.

Gadgets 360: Would that be connected in any way to Intel discontinuing its warranty for overclocking?

Kennedy: t’s a good question, and that comes back to our community too. The reality is that the overclocking community has now become more stable and more confident in what they’re doing, and so there is just less demand for that programme. We listened and said “Oh, you don’t want it, then we’ll stop offering it”, but we’ll continue to monitor it and if things change then we will adapt and listen to our community.

Gadgets 360: Talking about demand spiking because people have been stuck at home over the past year, did this affect the development cycle for the 11th Gen and possibly the upcoming 12th Gen? Have you made any changes to address that, at the technology level, the segmentation, or just how you promote everything?

Kennedy: One [aspect] is that more and more people are coming into PC gaming. There’s an expectation that there could be close to 1.4 billion PC gamers over the next year. It’s a crazy number, right? The second is that we know that the community is focused on performance, so we continue to try to update things like the BIOS and all these other things to try to just tune a little more and add a little more performance.

 

Gadgets 360: Do you think the gaming market has been affected at all, or at least what you need to address in the gaming market has been affected by things like the current GPU shortages and the launches of the newest consoles, how does that change your demand and supply equations?

Kennedy: With graphics cards in the desktop market, we’re lucky enough to be able to be able to just pop one out from one place and put it in the other, so as you upgrade to Rocket Lake you’ll be able to bring your old GPU along. You don’t need to wait for GPU supply in order to get the benefits we’ve talked about. We actually don’t an impact in that regard relative to the desktop market. It does impact the notebook market, obviously, but for the desktop market, we think people will be able to refresh even as they bring along their old GPU or wait for a new one.

The console is actually a slightly different answer. First and foremost, we’re very confident that the PC is still the best place to play, right? You can’t get 300 frames per second on a console, you can’t really even get 100; they’re capped around 60fps. The smooth gameplay experience, the amount of control, the immersion, you just don’t get it on a console and I’m speaking as a former professional video game player who played on both PCs and consoles. It’s just a different experience. That said, most gamers consider themselves multi-platform. Something like 60 percent of games who consider themselves enthusiast to hardcore play on multiple platforms including consoles and their phones. So we actually see the introduction of the new consoles as great for us. It’s like a great entry point for people to come in and then say, “Hey, I actually want to play more on my computer now”, and they’ll go and see that that’s a greater experience too. We see it as a good entry point for folks to come in and then the PC is kind of that step up.

Gadgets 360: Thanks for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to add, or anything we should look out for?

I will add one last thing: We are going to be launching with Rocket Lake a beta version of our anti-toxicity application; we call it Bleep. I mentioned earlier that the PC is the best place to play. We believe in putting power and control in the hands of the gamer and the person who’s using their computer. Toxicity is the number one pain point globally for people who want to play. We lose 15-20 percent of our community to social toxicity. This isn’t censorship; this is the ability to turn on and off what you’re able to hear. It’s real-time; it takes advantage of some of the AI that I talked about before to do real-time monitoring. So be on the lookout for that too.
