Latest News Today – Man Killed In “Tragic Accident” As Truck Hits US Pride

Florida, US: Police said the truck’s driver was a participant in the Pride Parade. (Representational)

Washington:

One man was killed and another injured in what US authorities said Sunday was a “tragic accident” at a Pride parade in Florida where a pickup truck driver unintentionally accelerated, striking pedestrians.

The incident happened at the start of the Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade and festival on Saturday, an LGBTQ celebration in a town near Fort Lauderdale in the southern US state, causing initial confusion whether the accident was part of a deliberate attack.

Fort Lauderdale Police announced Sunday that the 77-year-old driver was a participant in the festivities who had been selected to drive the lead vehicle due to “ailments preventing him from walking during the duration.”

The white pickup had begun to move forward anticipating the start of the parade when it “accelerated unexpectedly, striking two pedestrians” before crashing into the fence of a nearby business, the police said in a statement.

All three men were members of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, the police said, adding that the driver was cooperative with authorities.

The two adult men were transported to a medical centre where one later died, according to the statement. The other remains hospitalised but is expected to survive.

“Today we know yesterday’s incident was a tragic accident, and not a criminal act directed at anyone, or any group of individuals,” the Walton Manors Police Department said in a separate statement.

Justin Knight, president of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, called the incident an “unfortunate accident.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the unfortunate accident that occurred when the Stonewall Pride Parade was just getting started,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, who was at the parade, initially told a local broadcaster he thought the crash was “deliberate.”

In the immediate aftermath, he called it “a terrorist attack against the LGBT community” and claimed the truck had targeted the car of a Democratic congresswoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz — who was in a convertible waiting to take part in the procession — but narrowly missed her.

Trantalis explained on Sunday that he had initially “feared it could be intentional based on what I saw from mere feet away.”

“As the facts continue to be pieced together, a picture is emerging of an accident,” he said.

Wasserman Schultz said on Twitter that she was “heartbroken” by what had taken place.

“I am deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost,” she said.

“My staff, volunteers and I are thankfully safe,” she added.

The Wilton Manors Police Department tweeted Saturday night after the crash that the public was not in danger.

June is Pride Month, which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots sparked by repeated police raids on a popular gay bar in New York. The demonstrations proved to be a turning point in the LGBTQ community’s struggle for civil rights.

Latest News Today – UN Chief Outraged After 138 Killed In Deadliest Burkina

Security forces were deployed to secure populated areas in Burkina Faso. (Representational)

United Nations:

UN chief Antonio Guterres is “outraged” over the massacre of civilians in Burkina Faso’s volatile north, his spokesman said Saturday, the deadliest attacks since Islamist violence erupted in the west African country in 2015.

“The Secretary-General is outraged by the killing, early today, of over a hundred civilians, including seven children, in an attack by unidentified assailants on a village in the Province of Yagha, in the Sahel Region of Burkina Faso,” Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The country’s government said “terrorists,” a term for jihadists, killed civilians of all ages and set fire to homes and the main market overnight near the borders with Mali and Niger.

A local official told AFP dozens were wounded.

Guterres “strongly condemns the heinous attack and underscores the urgent need for the international community to redouble support to Member States in the fight against violent extremism and its unacceptable human toll,” Dujarric said.

Latest News Today – 8 Killed By Employee In California Rail Yard Mass

Police said some of the victims were employees at the site. (Representational)

San Francisco:

An employee shot dead at least eight people at a rail yard in California on Wednesday, police said, in the latest mass shooting to hit the United States.

The male suspect also died and several others suffered major injuries in the incident at the public transit maintenance yard in San Jose, just south of San Francisco.

Bomb squads were deployed after reports of explosive devices within the compound, and were trying to “clear out every room and every crevice” of the building, Russell Davis, a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputy, told journalists.

“There are eight victims that are pronounced dead at this point and there is one suspect that’s pronounced dead,” said Davis, adding those numbers could rise.

“The suspect is a VTA employee,” he added, referring to the local Valley Transportation Authority.

Police had rushed to investigate multiple early morning 911 calls reporting gunshots. No immediate details were provided on whether the shooter was killed by police or took his own life, or about the type of weapon he used.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

“What’s clear, as the president has said, is that we are suffering from an epidemic of gun violence in this country,” she added, renewing calls for Congress to pass long-awaited gun control reforms.

‘Horrific’

Dozens of patrol cars and fire engines as well as FBI officials lined the streets near the rail yard in San Jose, a Silicon Valley tech hub of almost a million people.

Local officials said the shooting — which was initially reported before 7:00 am local time (1400 GMT) — had taken place at a union meeting, with at least 80 staff on site at the time.

Several people were receiving medical treatment, said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo.

“Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting,” he tweeted.

The incident took place in a VTA yard that is used to store and maintain trains.

“Our thoughts and love go out to the VTA family, the organization and what they have had to go through,” VTA board of directors chairman Glenn Hendricks told reporters.

“I could not be more proud of the VTA organization. This is a horrible tragedy that occurred.”

The VTA tweeted that its employees had been evacuated.

US ‘epidemic’ of gun violence

The United States has a long and painful history of deadly gun violence, in the form of a steady daily toll of shootings as well as high-profile mass killings that have targeted schools, work places and shopping centers.

Homicides, mostly gun-driven, have surged in the US over the past year.

Mass shootings have occurred in recent months at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, an office building in California, a grocery store in Colorado and at several spas in Atlanta.

In August 2019, another mass shooting in the Bay Area left two children and a 25-year-old man dead at a garlic festival in Gilroy, around 30 miles (almost 50 kilometers) south of San Jose.

President Joe Biden last month branded US gun violence an “epidemic” and an “international embarrassment.”

There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the United States last year, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Latest News Today – 12 Killed In Weekend Spate Of US Shootings

Twelve people died in shooting incidents across US this weekend. (Representational)

Washington, United States:

A dozen people were killed and about 50 injured in shootings across the United States over the weekend, after President Joe Biden last month branded the country’s gun violence an “epidemic.”

The spate of shooting incidents included deaths in New Jersey, South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio and Minnesota.

In total, the attacks claimed 12 lives and wounded at least 49 others.

Two people died when gunfire broke out at a house party in Camden, New Jersey on Saturday night, and at least 12 people were injured, according to police.

In South Carolina, one 14-year-old girl was killed and 14 people wounded at a concert.

Police in Atlanta, Georgia, found three gunshot victims early Sunday after responding to a call about shots fired. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, US media reported.

Three others were killed and eight injured outside a bar in Youngstown, Ohio, early Sunday morning, while a 16-year-old girl was killed and seven people injured in a park in Columbus.

A deadly shooting also occurred in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the night before supporters and relatives of George Floyd, the Black man killed by a white former police officer last spring, held a march Sunday on the first anniversary of his death.

One person was killed and eight injured, with one victim in critical condition.

Minneapolis police told AFP that one suspect in the shooting had been arrested, while a second suspect had died.

The United States has suffered a series of mass shootings in recent months, including at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, an office building in California, a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado — as well as a birthday party in the same city a few weeks later — and at several spas in Atlanta.

Biden has introduced six executive measures aimed at tamping down the crisis, including a proposed rule to halt “ghost guns,” as firearms built from home kits are known, and boosting support for agencies involved in tackling community violence.

In addition to mass shootings, gun violence in general — including less-publicized incidents often involving family members or acquaintances — has surged across the United States last year.

Gun sales jumped at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Overall, 2020 was one of the most violent years in the United States in decades.

So far this year, there have been at least 200 mass shootings in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Latest News Today – Dozens Killed In Stampede At Israel Pilgrimage Site

Emergency services deployed six helicopters to evacuate the injured.

Meron:

A massive stampede at a densely packed Jewish pilgrimage site killed dozens of people in northern Israel on Friday, leaving emergency workers scrambling to clear the area and evacuate the critically injured.

The disaster occurred in Meron at the site of the reputed tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a second-century Talmudic sage, where mainly ultra-Orthodox Jews flock to mark the Lag BaOmer holiday.

Closed last year due to coronavirus restrictions, this year’s pilgrimage was the largest public gathering since the pandemic began.

Rescue workers had initially said that chaos erupted when a section of stadium seating collapsed but later revised that account to say the casualties had been caused by a stampede.

Israeli media published an image of a row of bodies covered in plastic bags on the ground.

The Magen David Adom, Israel’s rescue service, reported dozens of dead and said it would “fight for the lives of dozens wounded, and will not give up until the last victim is evacuated.”

Emergency services deployed six helicopters to evacuate the injured.

The army said its medical teams and “a number of Israeli Air Force helicopters with medical teams… are assisting in the mass casualty incident in Mount Meron.”

“The forces are assisting in the evacuation of injured and killed civilians and providing medical treatment at the scene,” it added.

“This is one of the worst tragedies that I have ever experienced,” said Lazar Hyman of the United Hatzalah volunteer rescue service, who was at the scene.

“I have not seen anything like this since I entered into the field of emergency medicine,” he added.

Yehuda Gottleib, one of the first responders from United Hatzalah, said he saw “dozens of people fall on top of one another during the collapse”.

“A large number of them were crushed and lost consciousness.”

Overcrowding

Israel has fully vaccinated more than half of its 9.3 million population against coronavirus, but restrictions on massive public gatherings remain in place to stem the spread of the virus.

Authorities had authorised 10,000 people to gather at the site of the tomb but organisers said more than 650 buses had been chartered from across the country, bringing 30,000 pilgrims to Meron.

The Meron pilgrimage is primarily attended by ultra-Orthodox Jews, a community that has at times resisted mandatory health and safety measures during the pandemic.

Around 5,000 police had been deployed to secure the event.

The area has since been closed, with rescue workers and security forces attempting to clear the area.

Latest News Today – 23 Killed In Fire At Iraq’s COVID-19 Hospital: Officials

The civil defense told Iraqi state news they rescued 90 people. (Representational)

Baghdad:

At least 23 people died when a fire broke out in a coronavirus intensive care unit in Baghdad, medical and security sources told AFP.

The explosion was caused by “a fault in the storage of oxygen cylinders”, the medical sources said, adding that several dozen people had also been wounded.

Videos on social media showed firefighters trying to extinguish flames at Ibn al-Khatib hospital on the southeastern outskirts of the Iraqi capital as patients and their relatives tried to flee the building.

The civil defense told Iraqi state news they “rescued 90 people out of 120 patients and their relatives” at the scene, but would not give the exact number of dead and wounded.

On Wednesday, the number of Covid-19 cases surpassed one million in Iraq, with the health ministry recording a total of 1,025,288 cases of the disease and 15,217 deaths since the first infections were reported in the country in February 2020.

The ministry has said it carries out around 40,000 tests daily from a population of 40 million.

Iraq’s hospitals have been worn down by decades of conflict and poor investment, with shortages in medicines and hospital beds.

Those patients who can often prefer to source oxygen tanks for treatment at home, rather than go to overcrowded and run-down hospitals.
