Xiaomi to Open Car Plant in Beijing With – Latest news headlines

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi will build a plant that can produce 300,000 vehicles annually in Beijing for its electric vehicle unit, authorities in the capital said on Saturday.

The plant will be constructed in two phases and Xiaomi will also built its auto unit’s headquarters, sales, and research offices in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone, the government-backed economic development agency Beijing E-Town said on its official WeChat account.

Beijing E-Town said it anticipated the plant reaching mass production in 2024, a goal announced by Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Lei Jun in October.

In March, Xiaomi said it would commit to investing $10 billion (roughly Rs. 75,000 crores) in a new electric car division over 10 years. The company completed the business registration of its EV unit in late August.

The company has been opening thousands of stores to spur domestic sales growth for its smartphone business but eventually intends to use these shops as a channel for its plans to sell electric vehicles.

Latest News Today – Carbon Compacting Plant Installed In Jammu And Kashmir

Carbon compacting plant is installed to decrease the non-biodegradable annual waste.

A new carbon compacting plant is installed in the valley of Jammu and Kashmir in order to support the Indian Army and counter the carbon footprint in the region due to increasing non-biodegradable output produced by the locally stationed troops in the area. The carbon compacting plant is a part of the green initiatives of Cosmo Foundation – the social arm (a community outreach initiative) of Cosmo Film Limited. According to a statement shared by Cosmo Foundation, the carbon compacting plant is installed with the aim to decrease the non-biodegradable annual waste.

The project is implemented to augment the existing carbon compacting plant in the district. The new tetra pack milk or TPM compacting plant will compact the empty tetra pack cartons into smaller pellets which will be expedited to a recycling plant at Khatima, situated near Dehradun, in a cost-effective manner. The carbon compacting plant is installed to address the issues of generated waste and double the recycling capabilities for the tetra pack milk cartons in the valley, said the firm.

According to the company, the project is a specialised compacting plant and the initiative is also aimed towards the reduction of the non-biodegradable annual waste of 12,00,000 empty cartons of one litre of milk (through tetra packs), used by the Indian Army. Fresh produce is a rarity in the difficult terrains of the valley. Indian Army procures the produce from the civil traders in Karnataka, Jaipur, Punjab, and Maharashtra, for the troops stationed at the border, for their daily rations.

Cosmo Films is a manufacturing company and is involved in the production of bi-axially oriented polypropylene films mostly used for lamination, label, and industrial applications. Cosmo Films Limited is a listed company on stock exchanges BSE and NSE. On Tuesday, shares of Cosmo Films settled 1.46 per cent higher at Rs 690.30 apiece on the BSE.

Latest News Today – Supreme Court Allows Sterlite To Run Oxygen Plant, Says

Vedanta on Monday said it was working with experts to resolve the logistics of dispatching oxygen.

Highlights

  • Sterlite copper plant in Tamil Nadu closed after protests in 2018
  • Sterlite can start producing oxygen in around 10 days: Supreme Court
  • “There is a national crisis. People are dying”: Supreme Court

New Delhi:

The controversial Sterlite copper smelting plant in Tamil Nadu, closed in 2018 following protests  against alleged pollution, has been allowed by the Supreme Court to run an oxygen plant to help the country tackle its deepening coronavirus crisis. It can begin production in around ten days and must supply it for free, the court said, adding that an expert panel will oversee production. The oxygen will be given to the centre for allocation to states.

“There is a national crisis. People are dying…We have to get the local community on our side,” said Justice DY Chandrachud, who was part of the bench hearing the case.

“No political bickering. We are in the time of a national crisis. We are here to protect lives of citizens. We have to support the nation as a court. It is a national calamity,” the court said as the Tamil Nadu government accused the centre of supporting oil-to-metals conglomerate Vedanta, which owns the plant. The centre objected to this, calling it a wrong allegation.

The Supreme Court said the expert panel will decided the number of workers allowed inside the plant.

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu government had allowed Vedanta to reopen the plant partially for four months to produce oxygen. The decision was announced following an all-party meeting where MK Stalin-led DMK suggested that Sterlite “should provide oxygen for free” to Tamil Nadu. The DMK also insisted on the monitoring of the plant’s functioning.

Vedanta on Monday said it was working with experts to resolve the logistics of dispatching oxygen. “We are committed to making the entire production capacity of 1,000 tonnes available for the purpose of producing medical grade oxygen,” it said in a statement.

Last year, the mining giant’s plea to reopen the plant was rejected by the Supreme Court. Earlier, the Madras High Court, too, had refused permission.

Vedanta’s appeal against the High Court order of shutting down the plant is pending in the Supreme Court.

The copper plant of Sterlite was ordered to be shut by the Tamil Nadu government in May 2018 over alleged pollution that led to violent protests that culminated in police opening fire on demonstrators and killing 13. The state administration ordered its pollution control board to seal and “permanently” close the plant.

Environmentalists and local activists claim the copper smelting unit was polluting the groundwater in the area, making many come down with serious diseases.

India today reported over three lakh Covid infections for the sixth straight day. This alarming surge has crippled the country’s healthcare system with overcrowded hospitals turning away patients as they run out of oxygen and beds.

Samsung Planning $17 Billion Chip-Making Plant in US | Sidnaz Blog

Samsung Electronics is considering Austin, Texas, as one of the sites for a new $17 billion chip plant that the South Korean firm said could create 1,800 jobs, according to documents filed with Texas state officials.

The tech giant is seeking combined tax abatements of $805.5 million over 20 years from Travis County and the city of Austin, among other tax breaks, according to the documents.

Samsung said in its filings that if Austin is selected, the company would break ground on the site in the second quarter of this year and that the plant will become operational in the third quarter of 2023.

“This project is highly competitive, and the company is looking at alternative sites in the US including Arizona and New York, as well as abroad in Korea…,” Samsung said in the documents, adding that it is taking into account access to talent, chip ecosystem and speed to market in its evaluation of the sites.

Samsung’s American customers for its contract manufacturing chip business include Tesla, Qualcomm and Nvidia.

Samsung’s filing said it plans to make “advanced logic devices,” meaning it would aim to make the smallest, fastest kinds of computing chips for customers. The company has an existing chip plant in Austin that makes computing chips.

In a statement to Reuters, Samsung confirmed it is considering expanding its chip facilities, but no decision has been made yet.

The documents say the project would involve building out 7 million square feet (650,000 square meters) of new space on a 640-acre (259-hectare) site that the company already owns.

US Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, called on Samsung to put a factory in his home state of New York, pledging to work to secure federal incentives for the facility, which he said are key for US to compete with China in boosting local chip production.

While Intel Corp makes such chips for itself in the United States, most contract manufacturers who make them for outside clients, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) Co Ltd and Samsung, maintain most of their facilities in Taiwan and Korea, respectively.

TSMC, which counts Apple among its major customers, last year disclosed plans for a $12 billion chip plant in Arizona expected to come online in 2024.

The filings with Texas officials were earlier reported by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper.
