Latest News Today – Euro 2020 Schedule, Groups, Venues, and How to Watch

Euro 2020 is here — in 2021. Thank you, COVID-19. You might have thought they would have changed it to “Euro 2021” but no, UEFA — the European football body that organises it — is sticking to the Euro 2020 branding. Delayed a full year due to the pandemic, UEFA Euro 2020 will now run from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, July 11. It’s a month-long football festival. But Euro 2020 is much unlike those that have come before, for more reasons than one. There is no single or joint host nation here. Instead, Euro 2020 will take place in 11 cities in 11 countries. Additionally, Euro 2020 comes on the back of an intense club football season — again thanks, COVID-19 — that has made fatigue the key word going into the tournament. The Euro 2020 winners might not necessarily be the best team, but the last team standing.

Euro 2020 schedule

This 16th edition of the European championship is divided into two major sections: a group stage that is decided by points wherein each team plays three matches, followed by four rounds of knockout stages that ends with the Euro 2020 final.

The Euro 2020 group stage begins Friday, June 11 and will end on Wednesday, June 23. During that time, 24 teams will play a total of 36 matches.

That will lead us into the first knockout stage, the Euro 2020 round of 16 from Sunday, June 27 to Tuesday, June 29. The winners of those will contest the Euro 2020 quarter-finals on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3. Leaving us with the Euro 2020 semi-finals on Tuesday, July 6 and Wednesday, July 7.

The Euro 2020 final is slated for Sunday, July 11 at the Wembley Stadium in London.

Euro 2020 groups

The 24 teams that are taking part in Euro 2020 have been divided into six groups. They are as follows:

  • Euro 2020 Group A: Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, and Wales
  • Euro 2020 Group B: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Russia
  • Euro 2020 Group C: Austria, Netherlands, North Macedonia, and Ukraine
  • Euro 2020 Group D: Croatia, Czech Republic, England, and Scotland
  • Euro 2020 Group E: Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden
  • Euro 2020 Group F: France, Germany, Hungary, and Portugal

Euro 2020 venues

Thirteen stadiums were originally picked to host Euro 2020 when it was set to take place last year. But due to COVID-19 restrictions on stadium audiences, Dublin’s Aviva Stadium dropped out. Spain, meanwhile, switched from Bilbao to Seville. Brussels was also taken off the list because its Eurostadium faced construction delays.

The 11 venues for Euro 2020 are as follows:

  • Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan
  • Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Wembley Stadium in London, England
  • Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany
  • Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary
  • Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy
  • Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Arena Național in Bucharest, Romania
  • Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia
  • Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland
  • La Cartuja in Seville, Spain

Every Euro 2020 venue will host group stage matches and at least one round of the knockout stage.

Latest News Today – Monsoon 2 Days Behind Schedule, Likely To Hit Kerala

Monsoon 2 Days Behind Schedule, Likely To Hit Kerala Coast On June 3

Cyclonic circulations persists over Punjab and the Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast, IMD has said.

New Delhi:

The onset of the annual monsoon over the Indian subcontinent has been delayed by two days. It is now expected to hit the Kerala coast on June 3, the weather department said today.

“As per the latest meteorological indications, the southwesterly winds could strengthen further gradually from June 1, resulting in a likely enhancement in rainfall activity over Kerala. Hence, the monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to take place by June 3, 2021,” a government release said today, citing India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.

Isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe may continue, though.

The cyclonic circulation over Punjab and its neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 kilometres above the mean sea level persists. So does the one over east-central Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast, at 3.1 kilometres above sea level, the government release has said.

However, the monsoon itself has been delayed because the “south-westerly winds have not strengthened,” according to IMD chief Dr M Mohapatra.

“We expect the situation to start improving from June 1, leading to the onset of Monsoon over Kerala on June 3, 2021,” Dr Mohapatra told NDTV.

Latest News Today – Indian Sikh Pilgrims’ Schedule Affected Amid Violence In

Indian Sikh Pilgrims' Schedule Affected Amid Violence In Pakistan

Police officers move to disperse the supporters of the Tehreek-e-Labaik in Karachi. (Reuters)

Violence erupted in several cities in Pakistan as the police clashed with the protesting supporters of an Islamist political party demanding the expulsion of the French envoy over the publication of blasphemous caricatures in France.

At least one policeman was killed by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) which has also claimed that 12 of its workers have been shot dead by the police. Paramilitary forces have also been called in to control the law and order in most cities of Punjab, a province of over 110 million people.

Over 800 Indian Sikhs are among those affected by the road blockade by the TLP workers.

“The Indian Sikhs who arrived here on Monday to attend the Vaisakhi festival in Gurdwara Panja Sahib Hassanabdal, Rawalpindi, could not reach there due to the protest.

“On Tuesday afternoon, the visiting Indian Sikhs left for Gurdwara Panja Sahib Hassanabdal in 25 buses which were escorted by the police and the Rangers,” an official of the Punjab government told PTI.

The Sikh pilgrims were yet to reach Hassanabdal at the time of going to press.

Asked about their expected arrival for the main event which is scheduled for Wednesday, the official said: “We expect that the Sikh pilgrims will reach their destination by early hours of Wednesday.”

The Indian Sikhs are also scheduled to visit other holy places in Punjab during their 10-day stay in the country.

“The Sikh pilgrims were to leave for their other holy places from April 15 onwards. However, if the TLP protest continues, they will have to stay in Gurdwara Panja Sahib Hassanabdal,” the official said.

The TLP, which bagged 2.5 million votes in the 2018 general elections, blocked the roads across the country following the arrest of its chief Allama Saad Hussain Rizvi, son of Allama Khadim Hussain Rizvi who died a few months ago.

The TLP, protesting the blasphemous caricatures published in France, is demanding the French ambassador’s expulsion and suspension of imports from France. It has set an April 20 deadline.

The Imran Khan government had reached an agreement with the TLP in November, 2020 to involve Parliament to decide in three months.

As the April 20 deadline was approaching, the government made an anticipatory move and arrested the main leadership of the TLP, including its chief.

On Tuesday, TLP protesters lynched a policeman, said the Lahore police.

A case has been registered against the TLP leaders, including Saad Rizvi under murder and terrorism charges. Its supporters clashed with the police at several points of Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

Violent clashes were also reported from Karachi. Similarly, the link of all major motorways connecting with different cities of the country was also cut off by the charged demonstrators.

At some points, the protesters surrounded the law enforcers to chant religious slogans. The police advised citizens to avoid travelling unnecessarily.

In Islamabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan was briefed on the TLP protest.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said: “The government will not succumb to the pressure of the Islamists. If such groups allowed to prevail their will, then every such group will make the government hostage to its demands”.

Meanwhile, TLP spokesperson Tayyab Rizvi said in a statement: “The protests will continue till the French ambassador is deported”.

He said that 12 party workers have been killed in firing incidents in Karachi, Lahore and Talagang.
