Latest News Today – Documents Show Middlemen Got Crores

Congress Vs BJP Over French Probe Into Rs59,000-Crore Rafale Jet Deal

India finalised the Rafale deal at an inflated price for the jets, the Congress said today.

New Delhi:

The Congress today lashed out at the government’s silence over the French investigation into the Rs 59,000-crore Rafale jet deal. The opposition party said according to documents available now, huge amounts of money were paid to middlemen in the deal, indicating that it was a vindication of its corruption allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. The party had even hinged its campaign on the issue in the 2019 general elections — a strategy that many later said backfired.

The controversy over the mega deal resurfaced yesterday with the Congress seeking a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) investigation after a news website reported that a French judge had been appointed to lead a “highly sensitive” judicial probe into alleged “corruption and favouritism” in the deal with India. The 2016 deal was for the sale of 36 Dassault-built fighter jets.

In a mocking tweet posted in Hindi today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asked why Prime Minister Modi’s government wasn’t ready for a JPC probe. The options he provided as answer were: “guilt conscience,” “friends, too, need to be protected”, “JPC doesn’t need a Rajya Sabha seat”, and “all the options are right”. This was preceded by another Hindi tweet yesterday, in which he posted part of a proverb referring to a guilty thief.

Mr Gandhi had, in the run up to the 2019 Parliamentary elections, attacked Prime Minister Modi with the “Chowkidar chor hai” (The watchman himself is the thief) slogan in the context of the alleged corruption in the Rafale deal. However, not only did the party fail to dislodge the BJP from power, its own performance showed only a marginal improvement from 2014.

Today, party spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a press conference in the national capital that the Rafale deal was an inter-governmental one between India and France and one of the two countries had initiated a probe while the other was yet to even comment.

“It’s been 24 hours since France has ordered a probe on matters like corruption, influence peddling, money laundering, favouritism. The whole nation, the whole world is now looking to New Delhi. Why the silence?” Mr Khera said.

“Now it is getting clearer that in the Rafale deal we have bought an item that costs Rs 570 crore at Rs 1,670 crore,” he said.

Suggesting that the deal was now rapidly heading towards being an “open and shut” case, the Congress spokesperson alleged that anti-corruption clauses from the deal were removed. He also accused middlemen of being involved in the proceedings.

“In April, it was revealed that according to documents seized from a middleman arrested in another case by the Enforcement Directorate, crores and crores of rupees were gifted to this middle man in the Rafale deal. We don’t know what the ED did with those documents, but France is now probing them,” Mr Khera said.

The BJP had yesterday termed the Congress’s attacks “lies”.

“The way Rahul Gandhi is behaving, it will not be an exaggeration to say that he is being used as a pawn by competing companies. He has been lying right from the beginning on the issue. Probably, he is acting as an agent or some member of Gandhi family has been for a competing company,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra had said.

He cited a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General and a Supreme Court verdict, both of which had found nothing wrong in the defence deal between India and France, to reject allegations of the Congress.

Latest News Today – Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) Review: The Screen That

Amazon’s Echo range of smart speakers is popular for its simplicity, ease of setup and use, and of course, the ability to access information and audio-based content through voice commands. However, in my opinion, the Echo Show range is far more impressive, and deserves a lot more attention for adding visual cues and display-based capabilities to the range. While there have been a few Echo Show products already, the latest is the company’s most expensive and technologically impressive one yet.

Priced at Rs. 24,999, the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is now the biggest model in the product family . Like the rest of the range, the Echo Show 10 is a smart display and smart speaker in one, with a 10.1-inch screen and a three-driver speaker system on the base. However, the device has a unique party trick – its screen rotates mechanically to face you, letting you clearly see what’s being displayed from anywhere in the device’s peripheral range of vision.

While this might sound impressive, how does it fare in practice? I’ve put the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) through several tests to see just how well this unique smart device works, and here’s my review.

amazon echo show 10 3rd gen review gadgets360 site Amazon

You can use the browser to access websites on the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)

Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) design and specifications

While earlier Echo Show devices have been single-piece units with a screen at the front and a speaker system at the back, the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) changes things around quite radically. This device is essentially two separate parts; the speaker system and other hardware is in the base unit, while the 10.1-inch 1280×800-pixel screen is fixed to the top of it. This gives the impression of them being two separate units, despite being firmly attached together.

The screen can be manually tilted upwards or downwards for easier viewing and camera orientation, depending on the height at which the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is placed. The bottom of the base unit is motorised, allowing it to rotate in a full circle to face in any direction. The power socket for the included adapter is at the bottom of the device, with a small gap for the cable to pass through, which leaves the rotating mechanism unhindered.

There’s no power switch; when plugged in, the Echo Show 10 is always on. This is a large smart display and speaker meant for use at home, and therefore needs to be plugged into a wall power outlet at all times – there’s no battery.

Although the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) can rotate 360 degrees to face any direction, you’ll have to ensure that it’s placed with enough clearance to move around unhindered, such as on a coffee table or kitchen counter. Naturally, it won’t be able to do a full circle in some positions, such as against a wall or with objects placed right next to it.

There are buttons for volume and disabling the microphones, along with a slider to physically cover the 13-megapixel camera

It’s possible to adjust the range of motion so the speaker knows when to stop turning; this can be done through the motion settings, and is easy enough to configure. You can also set an idle position, which is the default direction that the Echo Show 10 will face when in standby. It’s also worth pointing out that motion and tracking relies on good light, so the rotation mechanism is disabled in dark or poorly lit rooms.

The Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) has two 1-inch tweeters and a single 3-inch woofer for sound, all built into its fabric-wrapped base. The 10.1-inch touch screen has wide borders all around, with the 13-megapixel camera in the top-right corner just above the screen. There are buttons at the top to adjust the volume and mute the far-field microphones, along with a sliding shutter that physically blocks the camera for privacy as needed. This isn’t a very high-resolution screen, but it’s sharp and clean enough for basic viewing, and serves the purpose of showing Alexa’s visual cues well enough.

Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) features and app

The brain of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is Alexa, Amazon’s constantly evolving voice assistant. While voice commands and responses are the key feature of Alexa, the screen on the Echo Show 10 provides visual prompts, hints, and some basic video content to support interactions. You’ll see album art and track details, weather reports with icons and data, images and text related to searches, and more. You can also use voice commands to play video content from YouTube (which plays through the built-in browser) or Amazon Prime Video.

You can independently visit websites through the browser, or even access Netflix natively on the device. The Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is a capable smart display, providing more visual content than competing devices from other brands. Alexa’s ever-improving skills and capabilities as well as language capabilities now comprehensively extend to Hindi language commands in addition to English.

The camera also means that the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is a capable device for video calls, using Alexa’s native video chat feature to let you communicate with family and friends who are logged in to the Alexa app on their smartphones or have Echo devices with video chat capabilities.

Additionally, you can also ‘drop in’ to your own home from anywhere through the Alexa app logged in to your account on your smartphone; this worked well to quickly talk to family members at home or even monitor the house remotely. Other communication features such as announcements and voice calls are also available, and you can set the screen to serve as a digital photo frame for your pictures as well.

amazon echo show 10 3rd gen review side Amazon

The speaker and other hardware are built into the base unit of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), while the screen is a separate but attached component

Like before, you can stream music through linked services such as Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, and JioSaavn; control linked smart appliances such as light bulbs, air purifiers, and cleaning robots; fetch information from the Web; use household tools such as timers, recipes, and shopping lists; and activate various skills that allow Alexa to interact with content and brands.

Alexa itself is now able to understand more voice commands and work more skills than before, and generally offers an increasingly smooth experience. All of the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)’s features, including remote monitoring, communications, and basic settings, can be controlled through the Alexa app for iOS and Android. The app also allows for the configuration of smart home appliances and other Echo and Fire TV products, as well as letting the Echo Show 10 seamlessly integrate with your existing smart home setup.

All of this is suitably supported by the screen motion features; the device rotates to face you based on where your voice commands come from, and was also able to follow my gaze fairly accurately when I was watching video content or on video calls. While you might consider this signature feature of the Echo Show 10 to be unnecessary and gimmicky, I found it to work quite well and made using the screen of the device much more convenient. This is a unique feature as far as smart devices go, and definitely made for an interesting user experience.

Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) audio performance

The smart features and display-based capabilities of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) are impressive, but this device is a smart speaker at its core. Even so, sound quality on the speaker isn’t quite as impressive as the price might suggest. That’s not to say the Echo Show 10 sounds bad; it’s reasonably good considering its size and form factor, but doesn’t quite match up to our current top pick, the Rs. 7,999 Google Nest Audio.

amazon echo show 10 3rd gen review netflix Amazon

Netflix integration allows you to watch movies and TV shows from the popular streaming service on the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)

Much of this has to do with the fact that the screen and the unique rotating mechanism are the centrepieces of the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen). Although powered by three drivers – two tweeters and a woofer – the screen itself seemed to block and muffle sound a bit, making for a somewhat odd listening experience even at moderate volumes. At high volumes, I found the sound just a bit shrill and unpleasant, while it was decent at low volumes when within five feet of the speaker. Over longer distances, such as across a room or even off to the sides of the speaker, the sound was a bit awkward.

While the soft and pleasant tunes of children’s music – particularly tracks by kids’ artist Blippi – did sound decent, the electronic jazz track Forces… Darling by Koop felt a bit dull when far away from the speaker, with the quick beats sounding a bit muffled. The price and specifications might suggest that this is a capable smart speaker in terms of sound quality, but it is best used in small spaces for a single listener, rather than considered a capable option for a large space.

I found that creating a bit of space all around the speaker did improve the sound a bit by allowing it more room to breathe, per se, but placement for such a large device is a tricky thing and you might not have that luxury in certain situations. Users looking for better sound quality will be better served by the Google Nest Audio or Amazon Echo Studio; sound quality is definitely not the Echo Show 10’s strong point.

The idea of a combined smart display and speaker isn’t new, but the Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) pushes the boundaries of what you can expect from this segment, albeit at a premium price. Its ability to turn to face you, follow you around, and ensure that you have a clear view of the screen from practically anywhere in its field of vision makes using it a unique experience. Although a bit gimmicky, the feature lends itself well to the visual experience, and is a pretty good look into the future of smart displays.

However, at Rs. 24,999, this is an expensive device, and seems particularly so when you consider that sound quality is below average and bested by more affordable options. If those are key considerations, you might want to consider the Google Nest Audio instead, as it offers the full smart experience (minus the display, of course). The Amazon Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) is worth considering for its excellent display-based features, the continuously-improving Alexa voice assistant, and the futuristic experience of having the screen follow your gaze.

Latest News Today – How to Show Crypto Earnings While Filing Returns On

How To Disclose Earnings From Cryptocurrencies While Filing ITR

Crypto investors are now not sure how they should file their ITR in absence of a clear guideline

The government recently extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2020-21 to September 30. According to the Income Tax Act, a person, who has an annual income of more than Rs 2.5 lakh or who has received a payment on which tax was deducted at source, needs to file an ITR, disclosing all earnings. But cryptocurrency investors are now not sure how they should file their ITR in absence of a clear guideline to classify earnings from the virtual currencies.

After the Supreme Court lifted RBI’s ban on cryptocurrencies, many Indians began investing in this speculative market with an aim to make a windfall during bull runs of Bitcoin, Dogecoin and others in the recent past. Some of them must have earned handsomely, but how these earnings can be disclosed is now becoming a task for them.

According to Section 2(14) of the Income-Tax Act, 1961, a capital asset is any kind of property held by a person, whether or not connected to his business or profession. So, taxation experts believe, gains from cryptocurrencies too are taxable.

If they are, then these gains can be classified as either capital gains or business income. This classification will decide which tax return form an assessee should file and how much tax will be levied on the income. Income from cryptocurrencies can also be highlighted under ‘Income from Other Sources’ while filing the ITR.

The calculation of tax levied on cryptocurrencies will take into account the period of holding. If investors hold cryptocurrencies for 36 months or more, the gains could be taxable as long-term capital gains, and less than 36 months, it would be short-term capital gains.

Short-term capital gains are taxable according to the slab rates applicable to a taxpayer, but long-term capital gains are taxed at a flat rate of 20 per cent. For individuals who have capital gains or business income from cryptocurrencies, ITR-2 and ITR-3 should be the relevant forms for filing tax returns.

However, a lack of clarification on crypto taxation may result in disputes and it’s better to consult your tax advisor before you disclose your crypto earnings on ITR forms.

Latest News Today – Google to Show COVID-19 Vaccine Information; Testing

Google on Monday announced that it has rolled out new updates to Search in India to show people information related to COVID-19 vaccine and its registration. The US-based company is also testing new features on Google Maps to help users in the country find critical resources such as hospital beds and medical oxygen using crowd-sourced information amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. Google has also said that it has been helping non-profit organisations including GiveIndia, Charities Aid Foundation India, GOONJ, and United Way of Mumbai raise funds.

One of the most prominent updates that Google has provided on its platforms to support the ongoing COVID-19 fight in India is with respect to Google Search. When users ask questions about vaccines on Google Search, they are being provided with different information panels that show updates on vaccine safety, efficacy, and side-effects, along with information about registration. The search giant also gives a link to the government’s CoWIN portal to let users register for the COVID-19 vaccine.

In addition to latest updates on vaccines, Google Search has also started showing information about prevention, self-care, and treatment for the deadly infection under the Prevention and Treatment tab when searching for COVID-19. The details are sourced from authorised medical sources and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Last year, Google provided a similar experience to help users find their nearby test centres. It also recently featured a Doodle on its homepage to encourage COVID-19 vaccination.

Aside from bringing vaccine updates and information on Google Search, Google has also created a set of playlists on YouTube to provide authoritative information about vaccines, preventing the spread of the coronavirus, and facts from experts on COVID-19 care. These playlists are accessible through the YouTube India channel.

Google Search and Google Maps have also been enabled to share locations of over 23,000 vaccination centres nationwide. This information will be available from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and in English as well as eight Indian languages. Up until now, Google was showing information about 2,500 testing centres in the country.

As many Indians continue to look for information about various resources related to the COVID-19 care online, Google said that it has started testing a new feature using the Q&A function in Google Maps, which will allow users to ask about and share local information on availability of beds and medical oxygen in select locations. The company, however, cautioned that the information will be user-generated and not provided by authorised sources, which means that will need to be verified.

Twitter also provided similar features that let users find appropriate resources shared by others on its microblogging site. Similarly, Facebook and WhatsApp also have many groups that help people find resources, such as hospital beds, medical oxygen, plasma donors, etc.

Google also recently started showing important safety messages, including as part of the ‘Get the Facts’ around vaccines campaign. These messages appear on Google homepage, Doodles, and reminders within the company’s apps and services.

Additionally, Google said that it is running an internal donation campaign to raise funds for non-profit organisations including GiveIndia, Charities Aid Foundation India, GOONJ, and United Way of Mumbai. The campaign has raised over Rs. 33 crores ($4.6 million) to date, the company has claimed.

Google Pay users have also provided a COVID Aid campaign to let individuals donate and help NGOs supporting those who are in need.

“As India battles this devastating wave, we’ll keep doing all we can to support the selfless individuals and committed organisations on the front lines of the response,” the company said in a blog post.

The latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted India, with over 3,66,000 new cases and 3,754 fatalities reported just on Monday. The government last week expanded the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the country by allowing people between 18–44 years to get the shots. However, people are unable to book appointments due to the shortage of stock.

Latest News Today – Equity Mutual Funds Show First Inflows After Eight

Equity Mutual Funds Show First Inflows After Eight Months

Mutual funds that invest in equity showed a net inflow of Rs 9,115 crore in March

India’s equity mutual funds recorded inflows in March after eight months of outflows, industry data showed on Thursday, as investors took advantage of a stock market correction to place bets on equities. Mutual funds that invest in equity showed a net inflow of Rs 9,115 crore in March compared with an outflow of Rs 4,534 crore in February, data published by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) showed. Indian stock markets touched record highs earlier this year in a rebound from a market crash that followed the spread of the coronavirus last year.

But key Indian market indices have fallen again as rising bold yields and a surge in coronavirus cases weighed on market sentiment. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex lost as much as eight per cent during March from a peak it recorded in February, creating an opportunity for investors to pump in funds.

“It seems like equity investors waiting on the sidelines for a market correction have started making allocations taking a long-term investing view on equities,” said Kaustubh Belapurkar, a director at investment research group Morningstar India.

Mutual funds investing in debt instruments, however, showed steep outflows in March, mainly as companies took out money to pay tax and other expenses as the financial year drew to a close, the AMFI data showed.

New Delhi:

The giant MV Ever Given cargo ship that has been wedged diagonally across Egypt’s Suez Canal – one of the world’s most vital waterways – since Tuesday, has blocked over 120 ships at the southern entrance to the trade route, a high-resolution satellite image has revealed. The photograph shows nearly 2,500 square kilometers of sea area near the canal, which is peppered with scores of anchored ships waiting for the unblocking of the waterway.

Other photographs clicked by Maxar’s WorldView satellites provide a detailed look of the ongoing operation to unblock the artificial trade route that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. The images show earth-moving equipment excavating sand near the bow of the ship.

“The type of soil we’re dealing with is very difficult to manage, as are the tides which affect the vessel due to its size and its cargo load,” he was quoted by news agency AFP.
